Laptop advice

Hey there, purchasing my first laptop (definitely more of a desktop person but I've found myself with the need for a laptop enough times that I'm looking now).

Anywho, was wondering if this was a good looking config?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8800 (2.66 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
18.4" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I can provide any other data but that seemed the most relevant... my main concerns are:
1. Is that enough Memory to run that rig properly?
2. Is the graphic card overkill?

do keep in mind Nvidia has had massive problems with thermal heating in notebooks. Just about every vendor has issue a recall on models with Nvidia chipsets.

If it were my money on the line, I'd be heading straight to the Radeon notebooks instead.

1. 4 Gb is plenty for this game. Unless you run a 64-bit windows you'll only see around 3 Gb of it.

2. I'm running a 512 Mb NVidia card on my laptop and would have gotten more if I could have at that time. I think the game will use up pretty much what you have, depending on how you se your settings. Mine are not maxed out by any means, running 1920x1200 widescreen.

I would recommend getting a cooling pad to run it on....I got a NZXT Cryo LX, which is actually wider than my 17" widescreen laptop, and have liked the results.

Heh, alright... conflicting responses here. I was planning on running 64 bit vista by the way, due to the 4 gigs of memory. I'll take a look at the radeons... I've never really had much luck with ATI cards but I suppose I could say the same for Nvidia... I'm just more used to Nvidia's shenanigans.

Here's what I have, for comparison:

Dell XPS M1710
Core 2 Duo T7400 @2.16 GHz
4 Gb Ram
NVidia DeForce Go 7950 GTX 512 Mb
Windows XP
17" screen @ 1920x1200

They will tend to run hot, and will shut down if they get too hot. I'd strongly recommend a cooling pad. I don't have experience with that particular vid card, but my system runs just fine.

A 130M video card is OK but not at 1920x1080. Expect to turn down the resolution to 1600x900 or even 1280x720 to get the frame rate up.

Considering I run my uber desktop at 1920x1080, Yeah, I suppose that'd be a bit much to get out of a 1 gig card. I'm not really willing to go much higher than that price wise, I don't think though... so that may be it. Guess heat is the only factor now, so I'll have to invest in a block of dry i... I mean... a cooling pad.

It doesn't matter if it has 1GB or 512MB, it's a misconception that the amount of video memory has a significant impact on performance. That GPU simply isn't all that powerful relative to your resolution, the total number of pixels it needs to process per frame.

On a desktop, would you expect great performance at 1920x1200 with an 8600GT on a desktop? That's about the performance of a 130M. Is that 1GB of video memory GDDR3 or DDR2? The speed of video memory can make a big difference in performance since not enough memory bandwidth (speed x width) will cap performance.

The 130M is a nice GPU for a laptop, heck of a lot better than a lot of GPUs found in non-gamer laptops. My only qualm is pairing it up with a large hi-res display.

The mem was DDR3. And yeah... I'm not expecting to run at max settings like I do on my desktop. If I can run it without lag and it doesn't look like trash, I'll be happy.

Thanks a ton for all the help, by the way!
