Tip - If you can deal with redownloading everything again:

Copy the CoHUpdater.exe somewhere other than the installation folder, and run it again. Pick another installation folder, or rename the old one to keep the same location.

If you move the CoH folder afterwards, jut create a shortcut to CoHUpdater inside that folder after it's all done patching.

This way the "solo" updater forces a fresh installation, and since it's not located in said installation folder it won't give that error we kept seeing about disk space or insufficient rights.

For the curious: Remote control from Canada to New Zealand is laggy.

PS - But that doesn't mean we can't do it again tonight should you require further troubleshooting. Like I said, feel free to contact me anytime.

Hehehe.

That's how I started getting interested in IT.

Started way back when I was 16 actually, with my first computer: Apple ][c

Good times...

so you mean re-dl the updater from the CoH website and do everything agian?.... just checking if i understood correct

Edit: wait.... are you saying that in a responce to my "it creates a updater.lock file" or to the "rename/delete a .dll file"?

Well, either really.

If these issues are preventing the game from updating / launching, then maybe using a copy of CoHUpdater and then downloading/installing everything again into another folder entirely could fix it.

If it's just something weird you noticed, but the game still updates/launches, then ignore it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

As for the updater itself... I don't know what's best, honestly. the one we renamed *.original last night was from 2007 (and straight from the CoH site if I recall correctly) while the one I transferred over, *.latest, was from 2009 since it's actually the one workin on my game PC.

I do remember the one we tried last night that started installing was the 2007 one.

Well, im gonna do an install of my CoV disk, maybe THAT might let me in.... instead of creating a Frankin CoH install/updater from 2 different installs (my computer AND my laptops).... hopefuly itl fix the .lock problem... because thats getting stupid

Edit: it doesnt seem to get the .lock file.... but it doesnt seem to wanna do anything either

..... i created a bran new "install" and unless i put in the Updater-win-UI.dll file in there, it wont launch.... when i do... it works for about 1 min... then it creates that blasted .lock file....... can i kill the devs yet?

Edit: is there a way to PREVENT a file from creating? cause i would love to create a file that mimics the .lock but isnt locking it

Well, whats on my External is just a copy of the important files from my laptop *to minimise the DL time* and it keeps saying i have insufficient permissions/disk space to install.... whats funny is i have 100% admin privilages and ~380GB space...... only a tech god knows wtf is going on *points to Stalemate :P*

That message is probably that issue I alluded to yesterday: the COHUPDATER.EXE being used (or the shortcut pointing to it) is located in the same folder as it is trying to install.

If you copy that executable elsewhere, then run it, that message should disappear.

That's actually something I picked up here in the CoH Boards, if you'd like to see the source: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=120140. It may even be referred to if you want to create a quick Training Room copy.

We did resolve the communication trouble when I connected remotely, so at least that's out of the way. We're 90% of the way there.

If it comes down to further remote sessions, then that's what we'll do. Although this weekend's schedule is hectic (LCD TV to get repaired/returned, family outing Saturday, buch of acivities Sunday) the evenings should be fairly open so that would coincide with NZ time almost perfectly.

I'll check back here during the day t o see if there are any updates.

well if the .lock file is doing what i think its doing... then we might have to *sigh*..... on the other hand it might NOT be doing what im thinking its doing and its actually just VERY slow which in the case of someone with small patience.... not a good thing (i think i has ADD)

Edit: the sigh is because i dun like wasting peoples time

That looks helpful, but im not getting a checksum error, and that .lock file doesnt exist after i close the client

You may have already mentioned this but... is the game launching at all?

I'm confused about the presence of the updater.lock file, since I hav never seen it myself, but a quick search revealed that it seems this happens normally through doanloads / updates / file verification... or when launching straight from the Cohupdater.exe file isntead of a shortcut.

File verification didn't return any oddness?

nope, no updater oddness only thing is... my dad seems to think he knows EXCATLY whats going on... and that the .lock file is blocking other applications from useing something and then he rambles on about how i know nothing how applications work.

1: he doesnt know how CoH updater works
2: ofcourse i dont know how applications work, never wanted to till i wanted to be a game programmer
3: he doesnt have anything wrong with him..... but i think he was off his meds then

about running the updater itself and not a shortcut, ive tried running both.... same conclusion* with both of em.... they dun move.... and yesterday i think i left it for bout and hour and a half and it didnt move from "downloading file manifest"

*=right choice of word?
