Defense calculation.
Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.
I'm in a discussion with someone in the Controller forums about the Chance ToHit calculation and the Defense Soft Cap. The guy I'm arguing with is completely dismissing the documented Chance ToHit formula and relying completely on his own play experience, where he claims he has better survivability on 52 Boss farms with 55% S/L defense as opposed to 45% S/L defense. And he's not talking about defense debuffs. He's claiming that the extra defense negates their increased accuracy, which according to the algorithm is completely bogus.
So I turn to the Tanker forum, where I figure the majority of the defensive expertise lies. So is he crazy? Is the algorithm incorrect? I'm pretty convinced I'm right, but I figure it's worth posing the question to a different player section (although I'm sure there's plenty of people who read both forums, probably including Folonius). If he's level 50, then the enemies are only +2 to him, and don't get a ToHit bonus. Therefore, unless the mobs he's fighting have a ToHit buff going on themselves, and no Defense Debuffs, 45% and 55% should yield the same survivability.

The burden is on him to show evidence of this claim, since the game's stated rules and the experiences of thousands of other players do not support the claim.
Ask him to put together some logs or data or write it up. If he's willing to put effort into advancing his claim, we'll be willing to waste brainpower on it. Until then, I wouldn't bother. We see lots of assertions about the game that turn out not to be true.

Considering the game tells you what your Net Hit Chance is on every attack (and someone even posted screen shots in that thread) he's basically claiming the game is wrong.
Unless he is fighting mobs with -def (you said he wasn't) or +tohit (not mentioned) and the mobs are +5 or lower, 45% and 55% def are identical mitigation due to the soft cap.
45% is as Effective as 55% defense, agreed.
However, having 55% Defense (although this isn't for the same reason as the other topic) is better than 45%. If someone hits you (rarely, granted) with an attack with a -def component, then that 45% starts to get farthur and farther from the softcap. YOu get hit once with a -Def, and you slowy get hit more and more with more -def until it's null. With 55%, you still have an extra layer of padding to keep you alive slightly loner, even when that first -def happens. It's not a HUGE bonus, but it's nice to have the extra defens just in case.
