Probably a stupid question

I am recently returned, and never really played CoV side so I am unfamiliar with the quests and contacts. And add to that the fact that after a 2 year break, some stuff is still fuzzy. Here is my issue, which maybe isn't an issue at all.

I created my new brute. I leveled him up to 8 doing missions from Kalinda and Mongoose. At level 8 Mongoose had no more missions and didn't give me a new contact. So I leveled to 10 in AE and then tried him again. No intro to a new contact.

I popped into Port Oakes, and the only contact I have is Drea, but he won't give me missions either.

I know on CoH side when you hit multiples of 5 your contacts that you have worked up will introduce you to new contacts. What am I missing?

Feel free to call me a moron.

Drea gave you a newspaper, that is your new contact. Do newspaper missions until you get a bank mission, do the bank mission (or accept it and fail it on purpose) and you will be introduced to a new contact. Wash, rinse, repeat.

The advice that SunGryphon gave is basically what you need to do. But realize that since you're up to level 10, you're getting near the upper limit for Port Oakes. If you do the bank mission and are offered a contact, I'd suggest taking Mr. Bocor. He's a 5-10 contact, but according to Dread Tomax's site, he'll lead to The Radio as a contact, which is a 10-15 level contact. I'm not sure if the other lower level Port Oakes contacts have the same progression.

The other thing is since you're nearing that limit, you can start looking toward the next zone, which is Cap Au Diable. You'll get another broker there - either Desdemona the Glint or Boris the Russian. Do the same thing with that broker that was suggested with Drea. CoH does a pretty good job of introducing you to the next contact or thing to do in a level range (sometimes too good a job), where as CoV doesn't seem as intuitive in that respect in my opinion.

Okay, you're a moron.

I'm kidding, it's an easy mistake to make, but you said I could, so I did . It's not very obvious that the newspaper Drea gave you IS your new contact. The previous two posters answered it pretty well though, so I don't have much to add.

Don't feel bad about not realizing it. I made some DUMB mistakes when I first started that I'm not even going to mention here (they'd pick on me if I did)

I'll mention them. First you used to travel from zone to zone through the gates because you didn't realize that there were trains. When you tried to leave Atlas you couldn't understand why there were no intermediate zones but you went immediately from zones too low for you into zones way to high for you.

Then there were the times when you went into the exit side of the train and got mad because no matter how many times you clicked on the doors it wouldn't work.

And there was the time back when you absolutely first began and couldn't figure out where your mission was because you didn't know you had to click on a door to enter the mission (or building or train or whatever)

Just guessing but those are the three most common absolute beginner CoH mistakes.

1 and 3 didn't apply to me. 2 did.

My first character bought level 15 and 25 Training Origin enhancements because I didn't realize there were different kinds. I was also obsessed with keeping them green, to the point of spending all my money on it. Even though I gained a whopping .4% for it.

For a while I ran back to every mission exit when I finished one, because I had somehow closed my nav bar and didn't know you could just click to exit.

There were more, but those are the only ones that spring to mind at the moment.

In COH, in the regular city zones, you're given 5 origin-based Contacts every 5 levels. Since origin doesn't really mean anything, especially also since in COV, the Quartermasters (stores) sell every type of enhancement, COV doesn't dish out Contacts by origin. Instead, COV's Contacts system is more linear.

The first time you enter a new zone, you are automatically assigned to one of the two Brokers for the zone. You work for the Broker, as represented by the "Newspaper" Contact now at the top of your Contacts list, for several mission. After which, you're given the "option" of doing a Mayhem mission (smash and grab bank job). I believe you need to actually choose to do the Mayhem mission. It doesn't matter if you complete or fail it, afterwards the Broker will offer to introduce you to a regular Contact. Note that if you complete the Mayhem mission, you'll be given a temp power. If you don't accept the Mayhem mission, then the Broker returns to having you do Newspaper missions (with no intro to a Contact).

Once you're through working all that regular Contact's missions, you'll need to do more Newspaper missions to get another Contact. Later on, these first tier Contacts may introduce you to their next tier Contact. Unlike COH where each zone is for a distinct level range, in COV the middle zones overlap.
