DB/Dark?

After looking through numerous combinations of powersets for a new character I ended up choosing a (yet another) scrapper. I've never tried DB or Dark Armour so just for the sake of it I decided to throw these two sets together and see what I could come up with.

Now, a couple of questions before we get to the build.

First, if I understood correctly it's a good idea to invest in +Defense, +End and +Recovery as a /Dark. I picked up the +End procs in Dark Regen and Stamina as well as Numina and Miracle uniques. Also ended up with 124 points of Endurance once I get the passive Accolades.

Second, I really wouldn't want to take Cloak of Darkness. While it's numerically clearly the superior choice to Weave, I don't want it to blur my costume and the DB animations. Should I just get over it and grab it? (P.S, will switch this for the Physical Perfection thing in an instant if it's the rumoured half Stamina/Health combination power)

Third, the Sweep combo attack. I didn't pick up 1k Cuts because most DB builds I've seen don't take it. I'll most probably try it during the leveling phase and make a final decision based on that. Is Sweep good enough to warrant the long animation of 1k Cuts? Should be noted that I really like AoE damage.

Well, here's what I came up with. Any improvements you can come up with are very welcome because I'm inexperienced with both of the sets here.
EDIT: Also if you make a new build you can pretty much get the price range from the build I posted. I'm looking for a relatively "cheap" build, but basically the only rules are absolutely no purples and LotG +Rech only if absolutely needed.

I often thought about trying a DB/dark but i never did because of 1K cuts. I like AOE damage more than anything, and without Sweep DB doesn't seem really great for that. The looooong (and ridiculous on top of that) animation just kills the fun i think, i had a DB brute a long time ago and i really didn't like the animation on this power. /Dark works better with fast activation times as well, if you're stuck in the animation, there's a good chance you'll fire dark regen too late if something unexpected happens.

If i'm not mistaken, you don't need a lot of global recharge (about 35% ?) for the attack vitals chain. Unlike other primaries i don't think DB benefits a lot from global recharge, so going the defense route seems appropriate. But then you're more or less stuck with cloak of darkness + weave. You can keep CoD off most of the time, and turn it on when you really need the added defense.

A few thoughts nothing huge, but bare in mind I don't have access to Mid's ATM.

Not sure why you are seeing folks without 1k Cuts unless these are specialized high recharge builds relying solely on Attack Vitals. I would recommend taking 1K cuts for the mitigation offered by it and the Sweep Combo. In single target scenarios, Attack Vitals is the superior choice but I find plenty of opportunities to maximize AoEs. If you can knock spawns on their bums, the attack you less, which means you need to use Dark Regeneration less.

While I disagree with Celidya on Dual Blade animations (I like them), but a valid point is raised here. 1K Cuts can buy you time via knockdown, but you cannot use Dark Regeneration after 1K Cuts without interuppting the Sweep combo. You have to wait until after Powers Slice, then use DR followed by Typhoon's Edge. Learning to time this can be painful.

DSorrow, the order of your power selection seems rather sub optimal to me. Is this a new character you plan to level or a respec you expect never to exemplar with. If you plan to never exemplar, it won't matter. If you plan to level up with this, I would recommend changing the order of power selection.

I would recommend dropping Soul Transfer and Conserver power. These are highly situational powers.

Deathshroud and Dark Regeneration should be taken as soon as they are available. Timid Dark Armor players push Death Shroud until post Stamina, which I can understand (but disagree with), but waiting until level 30 will hurt your endurance management and decrease your damage output.

(This reply would be longer and more in-depth, but I have to be getting to work...)

I have a Dual Blades/Dark Armor Scrapper that I took to 50.

Out of my 5 level 50 Scrappers, she's my second favorite--alot of fun to play.

I took 1000 Cuts and I love it--the Sweep Combo is awesome.

I didn't take Cloak of Darkness and I don't feel that it has had any ill effects. (I hate the way it looks.)

All that being said, I don't think that there is a worse possible combination of powers as far as Endurance goes. I'm not saying it's unmanagable, but it's pretty rough until you've gotten in all the +Recovery you're gonna want.

Having placed your build in Mids, I have a few minor nit picks.

  • Stamina is over slotted. I would not bother pursuing small set bonuses like those gained from a 4th Performance Shifter. Max end is more effective in terms of set bonuses.
  • I'm not a fan of Mako's Bite. I know you are going for the defense bonuses, but you give up damage to do so. I would stick with Touch of Death, get the Ranged Defense else where.

I'm posting this build as an example where else to pursue set bonuses. Keep in mind I'm a CoF fan so you won't be able to build yours exactly like this, but you can see how it can be effective.

That's not only because of endurance but power priority, at least for me. It depends on the primary of course, but usually i wait until 24 or 28 for Death Shroud. I'm fine with endurance but with all the stamina pre-requisites, the needed armor powers, the travel power pre-requisite and the travel power itself... I usually prefer to pick real attacks first until i have a decent attack chain so i don't spend 1 or 2 seconds waiting for something to recharge while Death shroud is ticking.

Only exception to that is on a brute. Death shroud + fury is well worth losing an attack

What is this physical perfection thing rumored about, and where can I read more about it.

And I had a db/da for a lil while, got it up to 36 (pre AE), and it was really fun, but it was hella bad on end, although I didn't have passive accs or set bonuses at all, so im sure its manageable with extreme attention.

I wasn't implying everyone who delays Death Shroud do so for endurance reasons, though I can see how that could be inferred by my post. The point being Death Shroud is an endurance management tool often misunderstood by those new to Dark Armor.

I tend to delay the selection of Murky Could where you take it fairly early. Nothing wrong with either approach, simple a difference of opinion. I don't fine Murky Cloud to be of great use until the mid 20s. This frees me to to take Death Shroud by level 4 without sacrificing powers from my primary or pre-requisites for Stamina.

Ok, so I came up with a new build I think I could also use for levelling up to save a respec. I know I could use a dual build, but then I couldn't slot anything I pick up that's needed for the build.

Anyways, before I go on with rolling this toon I'd like to know how bad it actually is endurance wise? I've heard some bad horror stories of Dark Armor, and never really tried it out properly. Just asking because the character will probably end up deleted if I find the Endurance too bad.

Here's the build anyway. FA is supposed to be Physical Perfection. I'll probably slot it with 2 Endmods and a chance for +End.
