Tanker in need of build advice (Axe/WP)

Greetings, all. I am looking for help in tweaking my Axe/WP Tank. I know there are guides and I've read as much as I could stand, few of those guides cover Axe, most cover stone, and almost none talk about what IOs/slots really help out, number-wise.

Anyway, I am posting my layout here in the hopes that someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I should do to improve it. Please note that I am not rich so posting "Fill yourself with purple/Hami", etc. is not going to help. Hell, I think I've only gotten 2 purple drops since they were introduced.

I have plenty of respecs available so I can move slots, powers, and IOs around. Basically, I want to be as durable as possible. I don't have any hard numbers and have no clue how to really figure them out, but the Rikti Pylons deal 124x4 damage to me and seem to only hit me 30-60% of the time. I have recently found out that you can't have as many regen bonuses as you want, I thought you could. So, now I have to rebuild and redesign and am hoping some of you experts out there are willing to aid me. As I said above, I'm not rich (I've heard of some people with Billions in influence), but I should have enough to get most of the things needed and can work towards the rest.

I am somewhat durable, but I know that I can be better but I just can't figure out what IO/slot combinations will allow me to be a better tank to teams I am on. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I see nobody has replied so I will give you advice on some of the lessons I learned levelling my WP/Axe tanker to 50. WP has nice layered defenses (defense, resist, regen) and Axe has good mitigation in that every attack has knock down or knock up.

I would suggest downloading Mid's Hero Designer. It is much easier to share and plan your build with this excellent tool.

For protection there are two main routes WP players follow. First is to increase your Hit Points (shoot for the tank HP cap). There are many IO sets which only require two or three slots to provide an HP bonus so it is easy to get many HP bonuses easily. Make sure to get your +HP accolades too. Second is to increase your Defense to S/L/E/N (shoot for the defense soft cap to these positions. It takes a little more effort/planning to reach the soft cap to these positions but making the enemy miss more is always a good thing.

The Fighting Pool can really help increase your WP survivability. Tough gives about +23% to S/L resistance and Weave provides about 7% to defense. Both of these stack nicely with your current WP powers. Combat Jumping can provide about another 3% defense.

I notice you slotted a lot of End Reduction in your toggles but almost no End Reduction in your attacks. Your attacks will burn much more End while fighting than your toggles will. If you are having trouble with End you should slot End Reduction in your attacks first. Standard toggle slotting is 3x Resist (or defense) and 1x End Reduction.

I would not worry about slotting Taunt into your attacks unless you like the set bonuses. Concentrate on Acc/Dam/End in your attacks. One place you may consider slotting Taunt is in RttC. Some players like to increase the Taunt in RttC since RttC is a fairly weak taunt aura.

The only comprehensive WP/Axe guide I have found is one for Axe/WP Brute. I would suggest reading this guide, it gave me some good ideas.

Hope this helps.

[Edited to add address to Axe/WP guide]

I don't know if this comment held people back from replying or the having to recreate the build in Mids to look at it.

I appreciate the (finally!) replies.

I've heard of Mid's but never looked at it (hence my typing it all out). By redesigning, I meant using a respec to move the slots and enhancements to allow me to perform better. But, then again, that what most anyone would do when given good advice. I'll see if I can get some time to get it.

As for the Taunt IO sets, I mostly got them for the regen bonuses and the Psi damage. I've been told that there are limits to the bonuses you can have but no one has been able to explain it well. I was under the impression that it was limitless. That is also why I need advice to design by.

As for caps, I don't know what they are set at let alone what a soft cap is. Tell you what, I'll go ahead and do the Mids now and post it in here. Maybe then people can tell me exactly what I'm slotting wrong and what I should slot to be the best I can be. Specific IO advice is also welcome.

Edit: Here it is...

Personally I'd build for +HP, +S/L resists and +Energy/Negative Defence.
Aiming to get fairly near to the HP cap, and hit the 45% E/N "Soft Cap".

Limit-wise, 45% Defence (Technically it's higher but 45% is where the "Hit chance" of the vast majority of PvE foes gets completely floored), 90% Damage Resistance and 3212HP are the Tanker "Caps" - you can only have one of evey "Unique" IO, and 5 of each normal "Set Bonus" - example, 5x +10% Regen bonuses and 5x +12% Regen Bonuses will all stack, but 6x 10% Regen ones will not - you'll only get benefits from the first 5-of-a-kind.

The below build is an example, The most expensive IOs would probably be the Steadfast +3% Defence Unique and the Kismet +6% ToHit Unique, but neither should really be bank breaking. E/N Defence is over 45% when Hover is on, and S/L resists are over 70% with "Tough". You'll Regen roughly 75 HP per second with one foe in your taunt aura.

In the below build I've dropped Focussed Accuracy and Laser Beam Eyes in favour of taking "Tough" to increase the S/L resistances, but if LBE is a concept power (and you don't mind inflicting weapon redraw on yourself each time you use it!) then it can be swapped back again. "Focussed Accuracy" is a waste of endurance with the equilvilant of 2 Accuracy SOs in each attack and the Kismet Unique - some +Perception is granted via the cheap Rectified Reticle IO in "Build Up", which is plenty for PVE.

Willpower only has one real disadvantage that you need to cover - The RTTC Taunt Aura needs two level 50 Taunt Duration IOs in order to keep higher-level foes (+4s, +5s) properly taunted. Both Willpower and Axe can get away with little or no global Recharge (it only effects Willpower's Rez and Axe's attacks recharge fairly quickly anyway).

Thanks for a look at yours, Maelwys. Here's a variant on yours I tried in Mid's. The only down side is no travel power. I would miss flying, but if I'm on a team with a Kin for SB or a porter, then it's no problem. Weave gives an almost 8% defense improvement, so it might be worth the trade-off. Most all of the IOs I ended up copying off yours because I saw what you were trying to do there and it made sense. Wish someone would've walked me through all this when IOs first came out.

I think leaving Taunt that late might become a problem if you're exemplaring down for TFs etc. The rest looks OK, but the Numinas in Health will be very expensive, espeically the Proc. Same for the Miracle Proc in "High Pain Tolerance". For the cost of those uniques alone you could probably build the toon to the softcap without needing to pickup "Weave". I honestly can't see Willpower needing the extra recovery either. Maybe the "Regenerative Tissue" +Regen Proc would be worthwhile, but I doubt you'd notice the Miracle one or the Recovery Portion of the Numina.

Not sure about Weave to be honest. It gives a decent buff, certainly, but there's little point in going over the 45% soft cap and weave costs a fair bit of endurance to run. Being Willpower you've got Endurance to spare though. It's just fairly easy to softcap defense without taking weave these days so you'd save yourself a power pick. The Zepher Travel IOs aren't very expensive either (just don't get put off by the price of the Knockback protection ones! - the other two were only a few million apiece last I looked).

RE dropping a travel power... you could always drop the self-rez I suppose, it's effectively identical to a large Break Free. If you're looking at going without a travel power it's certainly doable, but you'd probably be better off with Hurdle and Combat Jumping rather than Swift and Combat Jumping - with one Jump IOs in Hurdle it's slightly faster than unslotted "Fly", with two Jump IOs in Hurdle it's about as fast as [Fly + Swift with one Flight IO in each].

I'll offer up my (relatively) inexpensive build for my WP/Axe tank for comparison reasons. The amazing thing with WP is the flexibility in slotting the powers available especially in HPT and RTTC. As was previously mentioned, you basically need to settle on the 'direction' of your tank and what you aim to do with it. Focusing on damage means taking different powers and slotting other powers with different IO sets. If you want to increase survivability, you may want to focus on increasing total hps and regeneration rates.

That said, I aimed to increase my WP tank's survivability without breaking the bank. You can build a quality hero without having to resort to high priced IOs such as the Numina or Miracle proc or even LotG's +rech. But more on this later.

Here is the build I planned out and am currently running with...

I'll note that for my build, I do use parts of Scirocco's Dervish which some will consider to be on the pricier side of things for both Cleave and Pendulum. I also use a complete set of Gaussian's which the Rech/End IO especially being on the higher side of things. The only other set that may be viewed as pricey would be the usage of Eradication set (4 out of the 6 are used) in Whirling Axe.

Just about every set chosen adds hp bonuses, +rec, +regeneration, +rech and other useful bonuses. As it stands, the existing build puts you just shy of 3100 hps (if you have the TF Commander, Portal Jockey and Freedom Phalanx Accolades). I didn't do too much frankenslotting for the build, but moving forward I can begin to fine tune the build even more. Obvious future upgrades would be to drop in LotG sets to replace the Serendipitys and use Numina sets. A secondary build can be put into place focusing more on damage if you will and taking advantage of other sets for damage bonus such as Obliterations and Mako's Bite.

Hope this helps.
