Netstat interpretation

How does one understand what they are seeing when they turn netstat on? I understand that solid green is bad, red is bad and yellow is bad, and that what you want to see is a constant variance of green (resembling grass) with a low ping if possible. But what is the rest of that stuff and how do you know what it means?

See, ever since the last issue, Freedom has been unplayable for me, and netstat has been remarkably consistent - green grass with single red lines every centimeter or so.

The red lines should not be there, but a single strand every once in a while shouldn't make it unplayable either. I'm on freedom and see no red spikes (currently). I'd suspect there is a network issue somewhere between your system and the game server.

I'm on satellite, not of my choice - I get intermittent lag when no one else does, on any server. sometimes it's solid green blocks, sometimes its yellow, and sometimes its red, but only on Freedom is it these single red lines constantly with only brief clear patches.

Just now my client crashed to desktop during the rikti raid in Cap au Diable. Single red lines interrupted by large solid blocks of red.

netgraph not netstat, just to be clear.

The height of the bar represents ping time. Green means a normal delivery of packets to and from the server. At full height they represent 1000ms ping. Yellow and Red bars, which normally appear as single width bars on the chart, are packets with very long ping times and usually go hand in hand with retransmitted/duplicate and lost packets respectively (don't hold me to that but that is what it looks like).

The top three numbers on the right are total number of duplicate, retransmitted and lost packets since the last time you zoned. Under that is a 5 or 10 second running average of ping time in 1000ths of a second, bytes per second sent to the server and bytes per second received from the server.

Argh... netgraph, not netstat. I guess that's why I could never find any referrences to it with a search. Thank goodness SOMEone around here understand the language of the terminally befuddled...

Anyway, Freedom is still giving me constant single reds on netgraph in every zone. Is Freedom in a different physical location than Virtue (which gives me little relative trouble)?

I too am getting the random red spike in the netgraph while playing. Its not stopping me from playing, but I am seeing definitely slowness.

I really recommend opening a ticket with support for this issue. I think if enough of us do it, then they may do something about it. There's a script they will run you through to make sure its not on your end. If you put it in your ticket when you open it, you can save yourself some time:

Put this information in your ticket when you open it:

-How do you connect to the internet?

-Do you use DSL, cable, dial-up, satellite, or another connection method?

-Do you use any routers, hubs, or switches? If so, could you tell us the make and model of that equipment?

-Who is your Internet service provider?

-Where are you located? Your city and state/province would be helpful.

-Are you on a home, campus, business, or military network?

-Are you using a firewall application? If so, which one?

-Do you use any Internet Security Applications (ISA) such as CYBERsitter, "Net-Nanny," ZoneAlarm®, McAfee® or Norton™?

Then do a HiJack this, and attach it:

1. Download the program HijackThis from the following link:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

2. Click the “Do a system scan and save a logfile” button.

3. Once the scan is complete, a text logfile will appear in Notepad. Save this file to your Desktop.
(Attach this file to your support ticket)

Then do Ping Plotter for them:

There is a free trial program called PingPlotter Standard that may be of some use to us in determining the health of your Internet connection while playing City of Heroes. We ask that if you are using a router, hub, or switch, to first disconnect this device and connect directly to your modem before running this utility. You may have to reboot your modem and/or computer to reestablish your Internet connection. This program is not supported by NCsoft. You can find the program and information on how to use it at http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

Please follow these instructions to run this test for us:

1. Go here: http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

2. Click "Ping Plotter Standard" and save that file to your desktop

3. Run the file you just saved and install the program

4. Open Ping Plotter

5. Find the "Address to Trace" section in the upper-left corner of the program window

6. Input the IP address and then click "Trace"

-If you play on Freedom, Infinity, Liberty, Pinnacle, Triumph, or Victory, type in the IP: 216.107.248.3

-If you play on Champion, Guardian, Justice, Protector, or Virtue, type in the IP: 216.107.240.3

7. Launch City of Heroes and play the game for at least 30 minutes

8. Once the 30 minutes has elapsed, please switch over to PingPlotter and click the "Stop" button.

9. Click on "File," then "Save Sample Set" and save the file to your desktop
