Crash and Burn
Looks like driver issue or some hardware conflict...
Do any other games work? Did you try all the usual fixes (reinstalling drivers, reinstalling Direct X, etc.) Did you try to run CoX in safe mode? (an option in license agreement screen, basically it resets all the fancy graphic options.)
If safe mode works, then you may try to enable all the cool graphic options again (one by one or all at once, you canm safemode back again.) and see if they work now. (you need to restart the game after that, safe mode ignores options you set.)
You may also look at Device Manager (My Computer|Properties|Hardware|Device Manager) for any conflicting/out of order devices (they're marked with yellow and red warning icons.)
And, almost forgot: What was your OLD video card? (that's important.)
yea, got drivers re installed, then updated ones from Nvidia site, updated Direct X 10. Not run in safe mode yet but nothing seems to stop the crash :/

Hmm... One more idiotic question... Do you use XP or Vista? (and that one about old vidcard, - was it builtin or an actual card, and was it Intel, ATI, Nvidia or something obscure? )
Was an ATI 512Mb something or other, I use XP.

Most of the higher end cards need to be plugged directly into the towers internal power supply ( there should be a lead supplied with the card )..if it isn't connected up to the supply then the card will not perform.
Could that be the problem?
The same could also apply if it is connected but the PSU isn't capable of supplying the power required by your graphics card from the power rail it is connected to. More likely to be an issue with lower rated or budget PSUs or if you have a lot of other peripherals connected.
Another possibility would be if the card is overheating - this would affect CoV more than Coh as many of the maps redside are more graphically intensive if the cooling on your card is borderline.
Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

Did you uninstall ATI drivers? (since there were no builtin ATIs, IIRC, the bit about disabling builtin in BIOS is irrelevant.) Again, sorry for idiotic questions, - it's always like that when you try to give tech advice remotely.
Yeah took ATI ones out.

Yeah I have this installed and the system details under My Computer says its working perfectly.
There is a 6 pin power adapter inside, with 2 leads from it, both with female sockets. Do these both need to be connected or just 1 of them ?

Crash happens before character selection as well as in game.
Power supply Unit is also brand new and strong enough for whole system.

I honestly can't tell you, I don't have the card or instruction manual for the card beside me...but you do heh
Check through the manual and see if that bad boy needs to be connected up. There should only be one lead supplied with the card so that means only one 6 pin adaptor should be connected...via the cable supplied.
BTW My Computer will state that the card is installed because the drivers for the card are installed...I doesn't necessarily mean the card is actually doing anything....it's just there
There was no 6 pin adaptor with the card :/ and the power supply didnt have 1. So ima using an adaptor.

If the card has 2 power connectors, you must connect both or it won't be able to function properly. It quite common on newer cards these days.

no the card has 1 6 pin, but the adaptor has 2x 4 pins. like this...

Play it safe, link one of the 2x 4 pins ..fire up the pc and see how the game performs...if that doesn't work...then link up both and fire up the pc again

Ah, my card uses a similar connector; I connected both, but you should check the card documentation carefully.

Didn't get any Card documentation, just an installation cd and a catalog from the supplier.
Could this be another issue? RAM, Mother Board or ME!>?

Look on the CD, there's usually a manual on there in PDF format.

which, in case of essential hardware like vidcards, is a bit like that old pkunzip.zip joke
But yes, look there and/or on manufacturer's site.
Will do...
Gawsh! Why can't things just work.

None of the above
If your unsure about poking around inside the tower then I suggest getting a friend that knows a bit about PC's to come round and actually get inside that tower, I'm sorry but there is only so much we can do.....it's better to have someone there hands on than having us trying to sort it out ( and possibly doing more harm than good )
DriverCleanerPro is a good little app for cleaning out ATi driver mess, and it's surprising just how much mess it leaves. I'd also uninstall any NVidia gfx card drivers amd run DCPro again so that you're starting from a clean slate.
Then download the latest drivers from NVidias site and install them, rather than install the ones on the disk, and then update.
So:
1. Download and install DCpro (a bit of googlage should find it fairly easily for you)
2. Uninstall any and all gfx card driver software you can find in Add / Remove programs
3. Download latest NVidia drivers
4. Run DCPro, select "Remove Multi", and select all NVidia and ATi gfx components
5. Reboot PC
6. Install NVidia drivers downloaded in "3" above.
(and for whomever suggested that CoH uses DX9, it doesn't, it uses OpenGL)

Hi all,
Hope someone can help me with an issue.
I bought a brand new Graphics card for playing CoH, the old one has been on the blink and runs slow and jerky in a screwed up system kind of way. SO.... I bought one of these,
Gefore 9800 1GB DDR3
Now everytime I load Heros I get the login screen as usual.. and then the server selection as usual, but I will only get about 2 - 3 seconds into the character selection screen before everything crashes.
Blocks all over the screen, and distorted colours like its in 256colours or something, and the sound is all screwed as well.
I ran everything perfectly last night for 5 minutes and then crashed during game play.
Anyone any Ideas what would cause this?
