Therapy for Heroes

This post is, in many ways, a way of discussing my own thoughts and feelings on Heroes in general.

I have recently been on an intensive, two-week (C)ognitive (B)ehavioural (T)herapy course to deal with 26 years or so of 'baggage', hence my absence from the community and the game itself.

So as part of the therapy I want to throw open discussion, specifically in terms of characters in roleplay, and ask people to do a CBT-lite exercise should they wish.

The example of how I'd like things to progress follows:

[u]CBT for Arctic Princess[u]

Early Experience(s)

Mother: secretary
Father: technician at the Chernobyl Power Plant
Father believed that hard work was the key to success. Mother was distant.
Kata felt she didn’t receive much love from her parents and this was how it should be. Love, emotions etc. did not have a place in a relationship.
Provision of a roof, meals etc. was the most important thing.
Thinking of others was also important but only in terms of it being for the Greater Good.

Core Belief(s)
I am unimportant. I do not matter.

Rules That Protect (the Core Belief(s))
If I help others all the time Then I will matter.
If I have a roof over my head and eat Then I am cared for.

Trigger Event(s)
Being sent to a research facility at the age of 11. This challenged her belief that she was unimportant and this led to the feeling of being different somehow. Wrong.

Thoughts
There is something wrong with me.
Other people are more important than me.
Other people do not need to know how I am feeling. Or what I am thinking.

Feelings
“I am angry about being in a position that made me feel anger.”
“I feel guilt that I have to face my emotions when other people’s are more important.”
“I am panicked when a situation is not under my own control (because I am letting other people down).”
“When people appear to show emotion to me I do not have a response and it causes anxiety.”

Behaviours
She withdraws and does not tell others what she is doing.
She pretends that everything is OK.

Physical
Restlessness.

Environment
In Paragon she is secure because there is always someone who needs help. In fact everywhere she turns there is always somebody to save.

It may appear to be a bit heavy or full-on yet I have learned a lot about myself recently and I would like to continue using the tools I've picked up in every aspect of my life. Yes, even the pretendy-fun-time-game ones.

this is a fantastic idea dear.. many of our heroes have their share of baggage and some with rather big chip's on their shoulders. Sounds very interesting.

Ellie spent a few months getting her head examined after the Requiem war. I think her shrink is still under 24/7 suicide watch...

Could be an interesting idea to post some of that up...

@FloatingFatMan

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Hmm, my Defender/Blaster/occasional Scrapper Kitsune Vixen (Vixens Shadow when gone scrapper) could possibly do with something like this. Otherwise the poor lass might end up in deeper troubles

i remember doing a full psychalogical analysis of Lunk as part of regaining his licence (with the help of the GF) but never posted it, and its long lost due to system wipes.

Much of his "problems" stem from abandonment issues over the death of his parents, and later his fiancee (which lead to his first outburst and loss of liscence), compounded by a cheating first wife, causing neurotic bahaviour and depression, usualy externalised in violence to others.

His tendancy towards agressive behaviour (which had increased due to the problems above) is due to his adoptive "father" being an exentric, unstable, and occasionaly sociopathic person, and being raised in a strong millitary, and predominantly male, enviroment.
