very very hard to predict as it depends entirely how you spend that hour.

Soloing it prob won't be much, teaming and hanging out in city zones it's gonna be alot more. I would guess anywhere from 50-200mb per hour.

Whats the download limit?

I've got mobile broadband with 3, and that includes a little traffic monitor as part of the "connect now" system; there's nothing like that with your setup, presumably?

Never tried it, but from what I've heard there can be (or maybe "will almost certainly be") huge latency problems with mobile broadband, making it all but unusable for MMOGs in the first place. That said, can't hurt to try!

Whilst I don't know the numbers, there's no way is it even remotely close to that number. CoH is designed to be playable on 56k dialup, so there's no way can it be sending and receiving that much data. I doubt it's more than a couple of meg.

thanks both
and it is three standoff i just not used it yet only got it yesterday.
i am moving (again) so would like to play where i am going
its 5 gig

Ah - in that case I'd just give it a go, checking the numbers on the connection dialog every 5-10 minutes to make sure the traffic isn't alarmingly large.

If it isn't, and the latency turns out to be tolerable, you're sorted.

thanks!
i'll be getting an antenna for it as for the next couple of years i'll be traveling so shouldnt be to bad i'll only be gaming no downloading minimal surfing (i got a laptop that i can go about 100 meters away and get free internet) just cant sit hardcore gaming in pub!

Edit
and the laptop is ugly to game on! tho runs better than my fricking server!

It's a bit of a favour to ask but would you post your experience of how well this works once you've had an opportunity to try it? I'm with Standoff, I would have thought that the latency would have made the game unplayable but I've never tried it myself and it would be really interesting to hear from someone who has!

Cheers

I aint got antenna yet so will be just the signal from the modem ...
i am in birmingham and the signal is amazing here... if your in a smaller city will be probably much different

Edit Edit

*shrug* It's playable on a 56k dial up (i know i've done it), but it caps transfer speed very easy. I was also counting sent and recieved together.

if its playable on wireless and 56k it should be playable on mobile broadband? right right... or am i missing summat

'fraid so - the infrastructure involved. Wireless involves an extra local (within your house!) stage, and 56k means you're stuck with a slow link out to the exchange. Once at the exchange, though, both systems are using the same infrastructure as your hypothetical ADSL connection to exchange data with the rest of the internet.

Mobile broadband, though, is routing signals through a different physical system entirely, and there's no guarantee that the data side of this is even meant to give low latencies. This might improve with time, as different networks try to offer USPs, and might be OK in some locations already, but for the moment...potluck!

Edit: Clarified meaning.

Yes and no... The speed of the connection isn't the issue, the latency is. 3G connections have a terrible habit of having quite high latency (your ping); but you won't really know until you actually try it.

That and also the weather will have an effect. A rainstorm will severely attenuate the microwave signals - how well the system handles rerouting may be a factor.

Having said that the game client doesn't actually pass a huge amount of data but you probably want to ensure you use an uncapped account to handle updates - especially when a new issue is released.

A SG mate used to use a mobile broadband connection and other than being a bit slow to load missions i believe it was perfectly playable.

I've also gave it a try using my mobile tethered to my laptop it was rather slow and from time to time a bit laggy but my laptops a ancient thing that just runs coh at the best of times so on a better spec it could be a lot better.

Ok three finally connected my broadband (2 1/2 days into my 3 day trial!) and i played a mission on an 8 man team inside a cave to test it out.

It was playable got some rubberbanding in larger rooms but its no where near as bad as times i have played on my server.

Conditions outside where sunny
And as i said i am in maximum signal area i'll update when i get to my new living quarters.
As to how much i downloaded. Was only a couple of meg for 30 mins so i guess 5 gig is enough to ONLY game.
Thanks for info guys

5gb should be plenty

As long as you can deal with the latency and disconnects. But perhaps the mobile broadband i tried was utter rubbish (I had 9 out of 10 signal strength and could not stay connected for more then 15 mins at a time).

Thanks for posting the results Gohan. Look forward to hearing your update under different conditions...
