It pops up as a differently named pet, depending on which tier of pet it was extracted from. i.e. i think the lich comes up as tortured soul. The extracted soul cannot be upgraded with dark empowerment or similar, but it can be healed or renamed as per a normal pet.
Which level of minion it comes from depends on its level in relation to you as well (but my lich never damned well dies so I only get floating grave knight things)

I just tested it for you. No matter what tier pet you use to summon the soul it is always classed as a Henchmen, hope this helps with your secret plan.
Aye, always a hench cause you can control it, but its power level changes on what you summon it from. You can now use it as the target to upgrade all your henchmen too, even though it doesn't accept them itself

Not a secret plan, just trying to figure out any possible reason why Soul Extraction doesn't take Recharge Intensive Pet sets and Gang War does.
Apparently you can't slot them into Henchmen, since Gang War spawns Pets. I wonder if this is intentional for some reason I can't quite figure out, or if it was some sweeping strike against all MM primaries that accidentally missed Gang War... (unlikely based on Castle's comments on the US boards) ... or accidentally hit Soul Extraction.
When you use Soul Extraction, what rank does the extracted soul pet register as in the Target window? "Pet", "Henchman", or something completely different?
I deleted my own Necro MM over a month ago so I can't check myself. I'm curious because of a little quirk with a few certain controversial IO sets, and I'm checking a random little theory.
