Clickwork

I posted Issues 1-6 on here a while back. I got great feedback from the SG regarding that story and suddenly a lot more people wanted to be in the comic and were happy to pose for screenshots.... so I started thinking what next? The last comics were a bit of fun and almost let’s see how many members I can put in the comic this time, but now my cox friends had bigger expectations. I dreamt up a tale and then an idea hit me....

This time around I would try to make it better on every level – tighter writing, better art, more character focus/depth and maybe something a bit different. So once I had the story idea I did a fair bit of research then I sat down and wrote detailed scripts describing every single panel (example here), so it would easier to pick up the shots I needed (instead of tailoring them to what I had written or vice versa) and so it’s almost been like being a film director, stand here...this is your motivation etc.

For the story I wanted three main things – try to showcase an original idea for a superhero, to have a plot device that would enable me to work in some origins for SG members toons and to make the story a character piece without too much action (although hopefully it would still retain some humour) . For the origins I also wanted to have five distinctly different types – one humorous, one historical, an old fashioned type superhero origin and a deeply tragic one, while also having a villain one further into the story. I’d also need a detective type character to piece the story together.
The first 2 issues (of 6) are complete; so far the original hero is there although unrevealed so far (even the sg members haven’t seen him in the game). Fez (who always jokes about destroying kittens when he’s online?!?) was an easy choice for the funny origin, I love the idea of a fallen angel who is knowing and sarcastic so Tired Angel fitted well, Clickwork’s tragic origin (with Clicks own input) has been hinted at and Just Rose will have the old fashioned origin. The plot is about to become more complex in the next issue or so with the different sub-plots all tying up by the end of the storyarc.

Very good

The way you've textured the images reminds me of Alex Maleev's run on Daredevil which was one of my favourite picks until Brubaker borked it.

Nice to see you on the boards Click , I'm sure Coin is looking forward to Click's origin (as am I), however he's pulling my leg a little as I think it's Rosie he has baited breath for really

I see your using Comic Book Creator with this. I used to use CBC but after MashON.com took over I couldn't upload anything, so how do you host it?

Anyway, good stuff.

Thanks, yeah I know what you mean, I don't really bother with MashON, although I believe a new version of CBC is out soon. CBC can publish files as jpegs or PDF's, so for hosting I upload jpeg images to a free blogsite I use and I use Yudu to host completed pdf's in the reader style which I have linked in my posts(this is also free).

Ah, kay. Hmmm, that gives me a idea, turn the pages into JPEG and use Photobucket slideshow?

I just read 1 - 11 and I must say, your work has become a real classic read! Part 1 was weird but it showed promise. Part 2 however, has really got me hooked. I love the detective angle, the writing is very good, the art rendering is effective and most importantly, I can really identify with the characters and their situations. Good work mate, and way to represent the Defiant Universe, could always do with more creativity from 'that other side'. Yeah, keep it up and keep it real. I look forward to reading the next installments, but give us more Hornet.

Hey thanks for the positive words much appreciated, yeah part one was a bit of a test really and I feel like I'm hitting my stride a bit more now. I'm enjoying making these and work has already begun on issue 12. Hornet will re-appear so long as I can drag him out of the bar!
