I have Sky BB and have had for 18 months. it's been relatively faultless. In ttoal in that time it's been down maybe 2-4 times, once for planned maintenance which was on the sky website (if you looked hard enough) and the other times was down for the evening but fixed the next day. For the price you're unlikely to get anything better IMO.

While I work for Sky so can be accused of Bias they have won loads of awards for best value BB from uswitch and others.

Check out www.samknows.com for a guide on who does what BB in your area. one inportant thing to check is if Sky have 'unbundled' your exchange. if they haven't you're basically paying Sky for BT's package with is up to 8MB and a 40GB limit. For £17 a month. Not a bargain. If sky have installed locally and your exchange is close by you can get up to 16 Meg and an UNLIMITED usage allowance, and it really is unlimited now, they removed the fair usage clause last month.

My exchange is only about 500 yards away, i get 16 meg and have downloaded at 1.2 MB a second from MS and 700-900 for most other servers. Torrents run great as well, fastest I had was 960KB/s for a certain well known Sci-Fi show.

With all ADSL broadband packages, mileage varies with distance from your exchange. For me, ADSL isn't really an option as my local exchange hasn't been unbundled and my in-laws, who live 2 streets from me, can barely get 2mbit. I'm on cable, and get 20mbit. Virgin have some irritating speed caps if you download too much which has hit me a few times, but I'm not giving up my 20mbit!

Oddly, whenever I use the online tools to check my phoneline, they keep telling me I already have another package on the line that prevents me from ordering ADSL, but don't tell me WHAT. Weird, as I don't!

We moved to Sky BB in the spring, but to be honest I'm disappointed. I drop connection at least once a day, often two or three times. I think it's the "free" router, which is probably as reliable as the "free" decoder box that came with the satellite tv installation. The problem with offering free routers is that they're hardly going to be top end because that would be simply uneconomic. I'm wondering, Miss - do have the same Sagem router that Sky post to new subscribers, or do you have something more reliable? It sounds to me that with your reliability of connection you have something better. If you have - please share! I need to replace the piece of junk on my desk before I call someone in Bangalore and start escalating my blood pressure again...

im sky and as aforementioned they are pretty reliable but you really do have to find your exchange and do some number crunching, i live miles away so i dont get a great deal of speed but for 10 quid im not capped and i play coh and my xbox live a LOT so was well worth it.

Well the big green BT cupboard with all the wires inside is just up the street. I don't think it's that: when I'm connected, the service is good - but I think I've got one of the duff freebie routers they give out. It was the same with the satellite - I went through 3 cheap freebie decoder boxes before they reluctantly installed a Panasonic 5 years ago - and, surprise, no problems ever since. I suspect the same is true with the router, but it's a lot trickier getting that confirmed. I expect that if I bite the bullet and stump up for a new router I'll have the same decent service as every else. I'm about as technically aware as Ludd "Luddite" McLudd of Ludditeshire, though

I have one of the first netgear routers as i signed up about 18 months ago. it's had a firmware update since then and it's been very stable. if your connection keeps dropping then get onto Sky about it. Try not to get to angry at the first line suppotr, they're card reading monkeys () but once you've spoken to them and the connection still drops ask to be passed to Second Tier or for a new router.

Thanks, Missy! I'll try to be composed and cool - not losing my temper and letting them fob me off (they really don't like the suggestions that the router may be faulty... it's always got to me my pc or the ethernet cable... or BT... or...)

Nah.. All cable here, no ADSL. I finally let curiosity get the better of me earlier and I rang BT up to ask them.. It's because we're on their light user scheme (we hardly use the phone). If I swap to ADSL, we have to go to normal line rental.
