Following a catastrophic hardware failure* which has cost me an 80gb drive (bugger!) and required me to get a shiny new Nvidia graphics card I find that I'm not no able to get into the game either on the live server or the test server.

Both sides start normally, take me details happily but when I pick a server the game hangs, sound stutters for a second or two and then the music resumes but I don't get off the Select a Server screen...

Any ideas before I reinstall while the Abyss is on tonight?

*sorry @translucent, I hope you handled those Council mugs well enough on your own and didn't think I'd run off or worry that I'd exploded or some such silliness.

Have you tried selecting Safe Mode in the launcher? This will drop the video options to minimum and allow you to track which setting is causing the problem (water detail settings is a likely culprit).

@FloatingFatMan

Do not go gentle into that good night.

ummm... no... then again, I don't seem to have the checkbox for safe mode. I thought verifying files might've caused it to appear, but it's not.

It usually lives somewhere by the d/l progress bar and next button right?

Is there a -switch for it?

/Edit - Ah, never mind, I'm being stupid. Found it... helps if I look in the right place.

Cheers FFM... this seems to be the problem... it really doesn't like the FSAA and DoF either, though on a 512mb card I'd not expect that to be a problem

they aren't anything to do with the memory (that just for Texture res really) it's more about the GPU, what card is it? the 8800GT?

Posted

It's the 8500GT.

I've upgraded from an ATI card so I'm used to not having the DoF and FSAA and pretty water on, I'm just curious really.

yeah... the 8500 is a bit of a dog, and the reason it's so cheap is the fact that it isn't as capable as the chip on the 8800 or even the 8600...

Aw bum - I should've spoke to you first _cass

Never mind, the important thing is I can get back into City without any graphical differences to before, which is far better than not being able to do anything because my computers is in bits on the dining room table.

I'm not sure whether it's switching my settings as outlined in this thread or the fact that I've set the AA settings to application controlled, but the problem seems to be sorted now.
