PvP Championships

In another game I used to play. PvP was a very important aspect and loads of people were involved in it. Be it in clanwars, fights over realestate (castles), plain character killing and a grand PvP tournament for the title of Hero. Now that last part is something I can see implemented in CoX.

In this championship Hero's and Villians are matched to each others in arena's fighting bouts. Eliminating each other until one victor remains who can then claim the title of Champion. To makes matters more interesting for every AT is that the championships would have one champion per AT Plus one open Championship where every AT can enter to become the Grand Champion. This way even defenders can become Champions!

The Championship would give him besides a nice shiny badge and a unique title also some interesting temporary benefits. These lasts until the next round of fights occur (say once every two weeks) and a new Champion is to be crowned.

Perhaps something that would interest the PvP'ers out here?

It did, they have done it before.

Edit: Twice at least!

And oddly enough didn't a defender win it all ?

Carlsberg don't do Farming,
But if they did..........

No idea. I didn't pay it much attention. As I recall, there were several different level groups and I doubt Defenders won all of them.

rad/psi from memory.

I think the outcome would vary greatly on rules though. Eg, I've fought against a friends rad/psi several times with my primary pvp toon. It's always the same result. After 5 mins in the arena she is ahead usually 4-2 or so. Then she runs out of BF's. After ten minutes I've won with a fair old lead.

Conversely, I can't hold a torch to an ice/energy tank but the same rad/psi walks through them with ease.

I do love the fact that there is no 'best' build for 1v1 pvp in CoX

Anyways ... more official pvp tourneys get a /signed from me

They did this before? Oh well this is a good idea if I say so myself

But what I meant is that this should not be an event. This should be something that would be available ingame and scheduled to be done at regualr times. The prizes would also be something ingame and desirable to make people WANT to have it. Think about a cool temp power for more ownage, statistics boost, double xp during the period, a power to look like a villaingorup of choice, you appearing in the Recluse Victory TF as opponent etc. Something giving you a nice boost (hopefully without making you to overpowered especialy considering you won from the best allready)

And defenders could win a Championship. When they fight in the Defender 'weight' class.

I doubt it could be done in an automated way. I also doubt there are enough PvPers to warrant the effort required to automate it.

There are, however, leaderboards (aren't there?) and scheduled, rated battles created by the system (which don't usually get used, last I looked).

If you did want to implement something like this, it would be only fair to come up with some similar system which could hand out prizes to PvEers, and I can't imagine something that would work for that.

It wouldnt be to hard to make this an automated event. If it would be worth to spend the time developing it? I have no idea as I am not into the PvP scene. Of course an event which would give nifty game effects should pull a few PvE'ers into PvP'in.

Would you mind explaining how?

An 'uneducated' guess actually. But they got a working arena system, they have temporary powers on a timer for a reward and that in my nonexpert opinion seems to be a bigger challenge then the rest of the work needed to implement this. I could be mistaken of course but at first glance this doesnt seem to be a real hard programming problem.

Nope. Scheduling the matches and ensuring that the results are recorded is likely to be a much greater challenge. Any and all games have mechnisms for handing out rewards, that's a given, and without the existing Arena system there would be no option.

Producing a workable system to automate match scheduling... I can think of where to start, and I can think of all the complaints about it. I wouldn't want the job (and I need a job right now ).

The arena already produces auto matches doesn't it surely some manipulation of that code could serve the purpose. As to rewards perhaps a special title option would perhaps be appropriate say '7 times heavy weight champ' no ingame effect but you can always impress your mates (if you still got any).
So yes /signed

Yeah, but the easiest way I can think of to handle that is simply to implement some form of Achievement badge for Arena Ratings.

The scheduling system would need to handle communicating to people who they need to fight at each stage, asynchronously handle collation of results, assign matches for the next round, etc. Over a multi-stage match system which could include hundreds of players. Then it has to handle drop-outs, it needs to have a mechanism for handling uneven numbers... I'm just coming up with this stuff in a couple of minutes of thinking as it comes out of my brain.

None of that is insurmountable, but also doing it so enough people actually take part to justify all that coding... I'd say some form of Rating badge would be a lot easier to do.
