You've probably got your university proxy settings configured in IE. As the updater uses the IE engine to display its pages it would be affected in the same way as the browser itself. Firefox has its own proxy settings and would therefore be unaffected by any such configuration in IE.

I thought it might be something like this, but since I really don't know my way around a computer I don't know how to change it back! Any help would be great!
In IE try: -
Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings
You will probably have to uncheck the 'Use proxy server for LAN' box.
And will most likely need to re-check it when you head back to university.

Thanks a lot, this has fixed a whole load of my internet issues!
Sorry for making a fuss about such a minor detail, but I'd quite like to know what's going on. Ever since I've moved back home from university the patch downloader does not show any recent updates, instead saying 'cannot display this webpage' and several solutions. There is no actual problem with the game, and I can still click 'Next' or 'Verify all files' I'm just wondering if there's any way to sort it. My internet explorer also comes up with this and does not work at all, but I normally use firefox so this is not a problem. Any help would be appreciated!
