Game Crash on Exit

Once last night and everytime today (5 times in total) whenever I exit the game it hangs.

This can be either from quitting to desktop after the timer hits zero or if I press the "exit now" button.

I have just tried launching the game and it even crashes if I just exit from the logon screen (i.e. not actually selecting a server or indeed putting in my password).

I can quit to login screen, however, if I then select exit from the login screen the game hangs again.

Is anyone else getting similar problems?

Well... Starting at the beginning...

1. What OS are you using?
2. What video card do you have?
3. What driver versions are you using?
4. What is your complete system spec?
5. Are you running dual monitors or dual video cards (SLi/Crossfire)
6. Are you using Windowsblinds?

I am too. Are you on Vista?

Hi FFM :-)

Well, just got a new PC, details below:

1. Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit (service pack 1)
2. Nvidia 9800 GX2
3. Driver Version 7.15.11.7516 (02/05/2008)
4. Intel Quad Core CPU Q9450 (4 × 2.66Ghz), 8GB Ram, 64-bit OS, Drive 1 - (OS etc installed here) 640GB 7200rpm HDD, Drive 2 - (this is where the game is installed to) 32GB SSD
5. Single graphic card solution
6. Not running Windowsblinds

Hope that's enough info, let me know if you need anything more?

You have the game installed to a solid state drive? Expensive!

Can you try relocating it to the actual HD, to elimate the SSD's access times as a possible cause of crashes.

Also, this:

This is a twin GPU card, running SLi natively. CoH does have known issues with SLi configurations, can you disable one of the GPU's?

Uhm, I'm having the exact same problem (identical), and the only thing I have in common with ShaolinMaster is Vista.

I just noticed that. I very much doubt it's Vista though.. I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate SP1, and the game works perfectly for me. No crashes at any point.

I may have a go at this later in the week. The game will play once I load it, it's just that it crashes when I exit which is a pain, but not prohibitive.

I don't know how I would go about disabling one of the GPU's but to be honest (or indeed if this is possible with this card). If I can and if that's what I have to do to play the game without it crashing on exit then I am inclined to switch to other MMO games and come back to COH when they get things sorted for SLI configurations, it's not like SLI is new these days!

Just out of curiosity, I tried booting the game with Safe Mode ticked and it exited ok without crashing. What exactly is Safe Mode? I didn't go all the way into the game in this mode as I could see that the video settings had clearly been reduced from my usual settings.

Safe mode merely resets the video settings to all minimum.

Ahhh, right... that would seem to imply then that my issue may well be Graphics card based?

I may try downloading latest drivers from Nvidia site, even though I suspect I already have the latest drivers... I only had the new PC delivered last Saturday and it was built 3 days prior to that.

By the way, thanks very much for your help on this FFM, it is very much appreciated, you do seem to be somewhat of an oracle/font of all knowledge with COX, they should give you a special in-game badge/award

Updated my graphics card drivers (there was a later version available - 7.15.11.7519 16/05/2008), however, this hasn't resolved the issue.

Will summon up the will to uninstall game from SSD and re-install to HDD, however, this is really making me not want to play COX right now.

I also note that someone else has a thread in the forum with problems related to graphics card.

I am also curious how Stasisesque is getting on as they reported the same game crash as me?

One should not that before installing new drivers, it's important to uninstall old ones first. It's quite common for old files to get left behind and cause conflicts. ATI have the decency to offer a driver cleaner for theirs, but nVidia don't appear to have one.

It's easy to uninsall them manually though. Try the steps below:

1. Uninstall drivers. Do NOT install the new ones at this point.
2. Reboot and start Windows in Safe Mode (Tap F8 after the computer starts to get the Windows boot menu)
3. Open Explorer and search for *nv4*.* These are the nVidia driver files.
4. Delete all files it finds.
5. Reboot Windows back to normal mode
6. Install the new drivers.

This will give you a completely clean system and hopefully resolve the problems you are having.

And thanks for your kind comments. I just want people to have the same gaming experience I get, which is trouble free, so I do my meagre best to help.

If you decided to move the game files from SSD to HD, there is no need to uninstall and reinstall, with the huge download that constitutes. Simple MOVE the game folder to the new driver, make a new shortcut to the "Cohupdater.EU.exe" file in the game folder, and run it. The game will ask you where to install. Just pick the folder above your CoH one and it will rebuild the registry entries and start, without the need to redownload.

eg. If you copy the folder to C:\Program Files, so that the full path reads C:\Program Files\City of Heroes then just point the installation path to C:\Program Files.

As for Stase having the same issue, I suspect she has something in her system that's similar to yours, perhaps the driver update procedure will help her too. It IS known to resolve blue screens in game in most cases.

Since it works in safe mode, try gradually turning on all the settings you would normally have until the problem reoccurs. Once it does, you'll know what option is actually causing the troubles.
