Tools of the trade

Hi there,

I am trying to put together some supporting material for some creative ideas have going at the moment. One is a poster like image and the other a newspaper column/article.

Question is could someone please suggest some packages/tools which could help me to create these. I have seen both newspaper/magazine type pieces done by people which look really authentic as well as full colour magazine covers.

What tools are people using to do this? If someone says paint and word....and the use of their boundless creative talents. I may cry, since I lack a lot of the later and was hoping to bolster my efforts with some cool tools in the former category.

Thanks in advance

I use Paintshop Pro and more recently Painter for my drawings.

If you're looking for a pretty intuitive system for doing page layouts, I personally find Microsoft Publisher quite acceptable. It's not free, but you should look on a well known auction site for the office 2000 version or similar and you'll be able to get it at a decent price.

That's the only thing I've used for page layouts and the like.

I'm sure that someone out there knows of a cheaper if not free alternative for DTP work though?

I use Paint.NET to fit the Paragon Metro together, using several layers as I piece the article together, importing other images as needed into new layers to fit things together, allowing mistakes to easily be rectified and individual articles to be moved about to fit in. Then, once I've done, I save a copy of it as a Paint.NET file, then flatten it down and save it as a JPG so I have the original and the uploadable version.

Creating the logo, I used the rectangle box, text and imported a logo that I got from the game using a screenshot and made black and white.

I suggest Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, lots of coffee, and of course, one of these

Too produce the Paragon Press I use OpenOffice (OpenOffice.org). Export it to PDF then use Acrobat Readers 'Copy File to Clipboard' under the edit menu then copy into paint.

For a first timer though I would recomend getting MS Publisher and a freeware PDF converter.

If you do get OpenOffice and struggle feel free to PM me for help.
