aid self or tough
It depends.
I know that's a poor answer, but it really does. If you're Defence based, Aid Self is great and you can manage with one Interrupt in there. If you're Resistance based then you'll probably need two. With a combination like invuln it's hard to tell, really only you can tell - it depends on your build.
When it comes down to it, Aid Self will add to your survival more than Tough, but only if you can fire it off (see above), otherwise it's somewhat useless in combat.
Run some tests (on the test server if need be). If you can reliably fire off Aid Self, then it's the best choice, but if not then go with Tough, because while it may only protect against S/L, at least it's always on and doesn't have to worry about interrupts.

A lot of invuln brutes get both tough and aid self, but they have to sacrifice maybe a second travel power, for PvE it's possible to get both, taking the Fitness, Speed/Leaping, Fighting and Medicine pools, obviously taking either speed or leaping pools.
Aid self before tough with 2 interupts 2 recharge 2 heal. I went leaping pool for combat jumping and that little extra defense.

I'm a resistence based Brute with Self aid slotted with no interupts. It can be used that way if you remember..
<ul type="square"> a) You cannot use it when you are taking damage over time,
b) Ideally you should use it immediately after an AoE knockback attack so all your enemies aren't attacking you (should be easy for Superstrength with foot stomp)
c)If you can't knock them back, you should time it a fraction of a second after their attack hits.
d)If you can last through a single fight, you can always use it as soon as the last enemy drops and be sure it will work - in which case you'll discover a few green inspirations for emergency healing last a long time.[/list]With practice you can get it off consistently when not taking DoT damage. When you are taking DoT you can pop a green.
I do plan to slot it with Interupts, but just haven't got arround to it yet (something else is always more important and when you only have a couple of slots in it heals make more sense).
What I'm really trying to say is even when not slotted with interupts its useful (with interupt reductions slotted its even better). Of course I don't usually attempt to tank, its not a Brute's role, so I cannot say how useful it would be to a tank.
I would possibly have a footstomp that was 1 end 3 dam 2 rechg using rage and invincible for tohit and then have a very good footstomp overtime to allow for a footstomp to aid self as and when needed.
I dare speculate that in melee you may need 1 interrupt and at range 2 interrupts "without" a secondary effect use from the secondaries like footstomp (for numbers) or Knockout blow for a (single target).
What ultimately you will find best is going to be something you have to work out.
