A tool to help building bases?
Well thankfully you wont lose any prestige by tinkering with the base, because you can always sell everything back for its original value. Its just difficult for others to use base while you are tinkering with it.. Just test everything out
I did get one idea, what about possibility to save layouts so we could change between them quickly and designe them separately? We'd only need to pay(or gain) the difference in prestige between them while swapping?
This is because at least the Goonies would like to have both raid layout and normal layout separately..
except you can't move rooms that have items in ertain positions, you cant delete items you have made from components without losing everything you put into it, you cant place a forged item and then put it back in your inventory for prestige, you cant read the full info on an unforged item, even when u have the salvage, you cant read the info on room stats until you can afford them, so you don't know if you're saving for a room tthat allows X, Y or Z primary items and A, B or C aux items, which kinda makes it hard to save, as i fell sometimes like we're saving blindly.
Ireally feel like ALL the pre forged/affordable info on base items needs updating.
AND if this goes ahead, cos its a damn good idea Yohan, there iwll be another 3rd party piece of software that is more useful than CoH itsself.

just use the test server as the testing ground? - you start a SG with 36 mil prestige.. im sure thats plenty to make a start of layouts, so you can find out what works and what does'nt before going to live..
doesnt gimme the salvage to make items to read their detailed descrips, this stuff should be available in the recipe view imho

The whole base design system sucks to be fair.
Re arranging the base is almost impossible without deleting rooms cus of all the error messages you get from obstructons etc.
Deleting rooms to make space to re arrange is an issue as well as you loose all crafted items.
They need to change the system so that you can put the rooms wherever but that it wont let you exit the editor till everythings lined up correctly...
That way you can change bases round more easily without loosing things...

I think i posted in another thread that the editor needs a room storage area. Ie somewhere you can dump rooms so that you can re arrange a base. The room storage area would obviously then have to be emptied, and the rooms in there put back into the plot, before you can leave the editor.

I think you're where I was couple months ago, trying to figure out what to build and so.
I made a partial guide for my own use:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/~jplaukka/guides/itemguide.xhtml
That may help somewhat, I know its not complete which is why I havent published it on guides forum, Im too lazy to get all the info..

Well, as I said I just needs tons of people to do this . Not tons, but some who can make 3d modeling. Cad or anything like that. Plight you can post on the US, can't you? Care to point to this thread and see if we got interested people over there?

pain in the bottom this is as i said before, players having to actually make the game playable for one another, i know it should be hard, and i enjoy a surprise, but spending what is essentially 200 hours of playing on something is not something anyone should take lightly : /

Ok Guys, I was talking with my SG leader (Plight), and taking away my noobness in base creations. What struck me as a terrible thing, is that you cannot test layouts, and plan your base in advance, at least not visually, you have to make it "on fly". Having that on mind, I'm thinking on starting a sourceforge project, although I lack most of the skills to do it , of a "Base Builder".
It would be a tool mostly like the "Character Generator", but for bases. A Cad with costs, bonus, etc. Of course it is a [censored] ton of work, and, for now, it is just a crazy idea. But, if we have enough interested people here and on the US, we could try to make it. The life of every Base Architect would be made damn easier.
So, anyone interested?

If you were thinking of doing it in 3d, with a proper engine to be able to construct a base as if in game, aside from getting the source code from cryptic, which i don't think's gonna happen, i could do the 3d, to make mock ups of all the items, and rooms. It could be done with screenshots aplenty to reference from.
The only problems are that 1) there'd be bloody loads of items to do, and it'd take all summer. 2) i'm only 17 and although i could do it, i've just finished my AS exams and my parents want me to get a job for the summmer, which would in turn: 3) increase the time period of problem (1) so that it'd end up being finished in about 2 years time. by which 4000 more items will probably exist and everyone will have probably forgotten about the wonderful idea anyway.
Other than that, if you can think of a shortcut, or some other way, let me know and i'll gladly be a part of any graphics/web/3d design you need doing.

That's why I said to make a group to do this Since you know how to program in 3d, something I'm really [censored] at, we can try to work on something. I will post, around monday, (have a deadline by them) what I had in mind, and we can see what is possible to do . And what help you need
I still think that even with a team, the sheer scale of the amount of items, programming etc. that would have to be done, would be too much to complete. Don't get me wrong, i think it's a great idea, but the only bit i could be aby use for would be recreating the objects you can put in a base. (table, teleporter etc.) but then you've still got animation, and the engine that is used in the game, and that's used for positioning items in the base, collision detection etc, isn't my area of expertise. the most programming i can do is a bit of html, with the help of dreamweaver, flash actionsciprt, and visual basic. I can't program for 3d, only use 3d design applications to produce 3d models/small animations. It would be possible to do in 2d, as if in birds eye view, with simple graphics to represent each object, snapping to a grid, on the same scale as in the sg base editor, but would that be enough for testing base layouts? The number crunching side of things would be easy i presume for someone who knows the figures (not me though) but you'd still have to get a massive load of images made. It'd take less time than 3d, but at the end of the day, what would people be satisfied with? if they only want 3d then i think it's practically a dead job :S
I know. And I agree. That's why I thought, inityally in do it in 2d only.
A 2d map of the base where you can put the items, here represented only by their shape and dimension. With this, you can calculate control, power, cost and such. Do you something something like this would be too hard to do?
This site is one i got off another thread. It gives some information on items and such. Haven't had very much time lately to go through everything yet, but it seems to have a basic list of most forge items to make a shopping list.
