  2. I still think that even with a team, the sheer scale of the amount of items, programming etc. that would have to be done, would be too much to complete. Don't get me wrong, i think it's a great idea, but the only bit i could be aby use for would be recreating the objects you can put in a base. (table, teleporter etc.) but then you've still got animation, and the engine that is used in the game, and that's used for positioning items in the base, collision detection etc, isn't my area of expertise. the most programming i can do is a bit of html, with the help of dreamweaver, flash actionsciprt, and visual basic. I can't program for 3d, only use 3d design applications to produce 3d models/small animations. It would be possible to do in 2d, as if in birds eye view, with simple graphics to represent each object, snapping to a grid, on the same scale as in the sg base editor, but would that be enough for testing base layouts? The number crunching side of things would be easy i presume for someone who knows the figures (not me though) but you'd still have to get a massive load of images made. It'd take less time than 3d, but at the end of the day, what would people be satisfied with? if they only want 3d then i think it's practically a dead job :S

Ok Guys, I was talking with my SG leader (Plight), and taking away my noobness in base creations. What struck me as a terrible thing, is that you cannot test layouts, and plan your base in advance, at least not visually, you have to make it "on fly". Having that on mind, I'm thinking on starting a sourceforge project, although I lack most of the skills to do it , of a "Base Builder".

It would be a tool mostly like the "Character Generator", but for bases. A Cad with costs, bonus, etc. Of course it is a [censored] ton of work, and, for now, it is just a crazy idea. But, if we have enough interested people here and on the US, we could try to make it. The life of every Base Architect would be made damn easier.

    So, anyone interested?

If you were thinking of doing it in 3d, with a proper engine to be able to construct a base as if in game, aside from getting the source code from cryptic, which i don't think's gonna happen, i could do the 3d, to make mock ups of all the items, and rooms. It could be done with screenshots aplenty to reference from.

The only problems are that 1) there'd be bloody loads of items to do, and it'd take all summer. 2) i'm only 17 and although i could do it, i've just finished my AS exams and my parents want me to get a job for the summmer, which would in turn: 3) increase the time period of problem (1) so that it'd end up being finished in about 2 years time. by which 4000 more items will probably exist and everyone will have probably forgotten about the wonderful idea anyway.

Other than that, if you can think of a shortcut, or some other way, let me know and i'll gladly be a part of any graphics/web/3d design you need doing.
