Slow Hand Clap

You know there are times when I'm really proud to be part of the Defiant Community. We pull together, we beat Hamidon, we run events server wide or within our super groups and we do ourselves a great service.

Then theres times when we conform to every single bad stereotype of the socially inept uber geek.

Friday 12th - Atlas Park - 8.30pm an example of the second sort. It started after the end of what I think was a costume competition (I wasn't in the zone for the start of it). Some bright spark decided to complain about the result over the request channel and they did not bother to censor themselves in the slightest. Within minutes the request and broadcast channels had degenerated into a mindless slanging match worthy of Jerry Springer. I sincerely hope that the participants of this exersice in idiocy got petitioned and banned for their excelance in the field of stupidity. I wont miss any of you.

That was pretty bad.
In fact, it was worse than that. It was an apalling display of foul-mouthed idiocy, and any new players who happened to arrive in Atlas at that time probably wondered if they'd come to the right game.

Request and Broadcast aren't the place for arguments, and certainly not for ones of the kind being engaged in that evening.

Those involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Its hard to get banned. I often hope that issues like this are a rarity but they seem on the up. Its unfortunate that even though I take this view I find I have recently been accused of picking open fights during public events. I can think of only one where I lost my rag at someone who sa my name and picked a fight with me. Even then it was scarcely worth a mention. With the exception of this I am pretty clean of this behaviour.

Until I read this though I was inaware it happened as I stood around to take in the lag for a while before shooting on CoV to join my SG. Im glad I did miss it.

I disabled arena months ago due to childish obnoxious chat. I just didnt want to read it.

By in large I remember shame on those who lash out and greater shame on those who lash back.

It does seem as if there's been an increase in jerks turning up in Atlas.
Last night was the second time in as many weeks that DJ Angel was forced off her traditional spot on the Atlas plaque during her set on Evo Radio. Why is it that people feel they have to behave like that? What conceivable use is such spiteful behaviour?

Annonymity + free roaming game = Trolls/Idiots/n00bs etc

I believe there's actually been a scientific study made on it... it's called The Impact of Anonymity on Disinhibitive Behavior Through Computer-Mediated Communication.

If that's a bit too heavy for ya, though, Penny-Arcade's Gabriel paraphrased it into a somewhat more easy-to-read version, Link [Warning, contains adult content].

Once again, education has been merged with entertainment... that's why us CoH-types are so much smarter than the WoW-crowd.

Thanks Black Dragon - I do like that Penny Arcade strip I lost where it was .. you've probably added a word to the forum auto consor now as well - lucky you!

I'm kinda' surprised it wasn't there in the first place... but what was I supposed to do? It's the official title, and I wouldn't wanna mess with the intelectual property of John gabriel... :P

Bridger sure edited it snappily, though... although I wouldn't say that it 'contains adult content' per se. Unless he's referring to Penny Arcade as a whole, in which case I DO suppose it contains adult content...

I realise peoples views on Annonimity and all I I agree that its has an effect but I cant help but feel they would behave this way anyway in RL if they could.

If you think on these lines you will see where Im comig from. Its all about not dealing with responsibility. And so a group of loudmouths in that pub you were in th other night ,ay be a different story when you find one on their own and totally sober.

Its the same principle and so what Im saying is annonimity is an imporant factor but I feel too many people place too much value on it when it is actually part of a pattern. And people who act up behind a keyboard and a chat handle aere likely the same types of people who would group together and cause problems or act big and clever in front of their friends.
