Pimp my defender (Ff/En)

Oooooook.

So recently I've started to feel a little less than useful on missions with my forcefield defender, who is reaching 22 soon. I've been thinking about deleting him, and, tbh, probably will if it doesn't pick up.

Asking for ideas in another thread gave me some thoughts about how I've built it. I have a free respec so was thinking of trying a highly team-based build.

So check this out, for level 22:
---------------------------------------------
Exported from Ver: 1.7.6.0 of the CoH_CoV Character Builder
---------------------------------------------
Name: Dark Bubble (22)
Level: 50
Archetype: Defender
Primary: Force Field
Secondary: Energy Blast
---------------------------------------------
01) --> Deflection Shield==> DefBuf(1)DefBuf(3)DefBuf(3)EndRdx(5)
01) --> Power Bolt==> Acc(1)Dmg(11)
02) --> Power Blast==> Acc(2)Dmg(5)
04) --> Force Bolt==> Acc(4)Rechg(9)
06) --> Insulation Shield==> DefBuf(6)DefBuf(7)DefBuf(7)EndRdx(9)
08) --> Hover==> Fly(8)EndRdx(11)
10) --> Hurdle==> Jump(10)
12) --> Dispersion Bubble==> DefBuf(12)DefBuf(13)DefBuf(13)EndRdx(15)
14) --> Fly==> Fly(14)Fly(15)EndRdx(17)
16) --> Aid Other==> Heal(16)Heal(17)Heal(19)IntRdx(19)
18) --> Health==> Heal(18)
20) --> Stamina==> EndMod(20)EndMod(21)EndMod(21)
22) --> Maneuvers==> DefBuf(22)
---------------------------------------------
01) --> Power Slide==> Empty(1)
01) --> Sprint==> Empty(1)
01) --> Brawl==> Empty(1)
02) --> Rest==> Empty(2)
01) --> Vigilance==> Empty(1)
---------------------------------------------

Ok, so, thoughts?

Yes, I realise that most of the time I'll be standing around, maybe throwing out the occasional Force Bolt, small useless blast, or heal, but I might be able to live with that, as long as I feel that I'm contributing successfully.

Thanks in advance

Why do you need fitness pool?

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

I think you'll be really, really bored soon. I already feel bored when playing my empath and the team isn't taking any damage. Sure I'm running assault & tactics, throwing out cm, fortitude and all the rest but I still feel bored then.

I think it looks good - and despite what people have said here (and on the other thread) I don't think it will be necessarily boring.

You will have 2 attacks (3 counting force bolt) for when the team is sailing through quite happily, so as long as you get those slotted up a little later I don't think you will get bored (I ran with only the same 2 attacks on a kinetics defender till the mid 30s - tho I admit kinetics is more frenetic)

It's probably a build that you'll either love or hate tho - so it won't necessarily be the redemtion of your Force Field defender

If you're bored: ditch the Medicine and possibly the Leadership pools and get and slot up some more attacks. That way you'll have more things to do when your primary isn't needed.

I agree, does look kinda dull and afer reading your other thread, it looks like exactly the kind of build you want to avoid. As FF defenders go, I'm not sure what can be done to make them more interesting. Like you said earlier, back in the good old days when you could 6 slot for damage you made an OK offender but now without some self damage buff power(s) you can't really do that. Assault will help somewhat I suppose. Also, being FF you might be able to get away with using snipe more often that would normally happen. I'd suggest dumping some of the FF and pool powers and take more from your secondary, like snipe and other single target attacks. If this is for mainly PvE energy torrent might be good too. Try to fit assault in too. Must haves from FF would be the bubble buffs and dispersion bubble. Also Force Bubble if you decide to stick with it. If you want to PvP force bolt is a must as it's a toggle dropper.

Well, if you want to make FF/NRG interesting, the only way to go is to learn to love knockback IMO.

Ok! So yesterday I did my respec, changed a few things around and ended up with this:
---------------------------------------------
Exported from Ver: 1.7.6.0 of the CoH_CoV Character Builder
---------------------------------------------
Name: Dark Bubble (24)
Level: 50
Archetype: Defender
Primary: Force Field
Secondary: Energy Blast

01) --> Power Bolt==> Acc(1)Rechg(3)
02) --> Deflection Shield==> DefBuf(2)DefBuf(3)DefBuf(5)EndRdx(5)
04) --> Force Bolt==> Dmg(4)Acc(7)
06) --> Insulation Shield==> DefBuf(6)DefBuf(7)DefBuf(9)EndRdx(9)
08) --> Hover==> Fly(8)
10) --> Aid Other==> Heal(10)Heal(11)IntRdx(11)Rechg(13)
12) --> Dispersion Bubble==> DefBuf(12)DefBuf(13)DefBuf(15)EndRdx(15)
14) --> Fly==> EndRdx(17)

24) --> Power Burst==> Acc(24)

01) --> Sprint==> Empty(1)
01) --> Brawl==> Empty(1)
02) --> Rest==> Empty(2)
01) --> Vigilance==> Empty(1)
---------------------------------------------

Yup just got to level 24 today (thanks to MBars Moonfire TF - and the people that got me the last bar to 23 so I could join!), and it's... interesting.

My endurance is pretty good, I can bubble the whole team and get down to about half end, thats with hover, dispersion bubble, tactics, and maneuvers running, which seems decent to me. I picked up Power Burst as I did want something to do some damage after all, and since I'm hovering I'm finding the knockback not as bad. Power Blast wasn't too bad by itself recharge-wise tho. Since I'm in the fray (or over it I guess) I can use my aid other power pretty easily (and the heal isn't too bad), and power burst too.

So, he has been granted a stay of execution! (for the time being)... No idea how the next few levels will progress, might pick up a respec sometime so that when I get a couple more powers I can reshuffle and put stamina in there, as I'll have more toggles running then.

Thinking Assault soon, Repulsion Field, and the last few bubbles when they come up.

In retrospect I wish I'd taken assault instead of stimulant, but I was thinking of picking up Rez at 24... Now I don't know how soon I'll be picking it up.

Thanks for joining me in my strange ride through defenderdom, will see how it continues in the next episode

Well, if you want to make FF Defenders interesting you really have to be into PvP as they pwn hard in PvP
PFF : Save your [censored] self
Force Bolt : Knockout toggles of your enemy
Deflection Field, Insulation Shield and Dispersion are just standard you have to have them
Detention Field is useful holding a very strong enemy for a while e.g.: Blappers, Spines Scrappers etc.
Repulsion Field: if anyone with toggles comes close Repulsion field can easily knock their toggles off.
Repulsion Bomb: didnt really find it useful
Force Bubble: block people in corners and than gank them

Good to get is Leadership pool and Stamina is still usefull

I dont have any end reducs in Deflection Shield or Insulation Shield. Only 1 in Dispersion bubble.

If you are going to PvP the Power Mastery is useful for Conserve Power if you have end trouble at a certain point, and I think Power Build Up+Aim+Power Burst+Power Blast+Total Focus should do some nice damage

I hope I help you with this information! if you have any questions just send a tell to @Reactor Wall

Interestingly enough I'm doing the same sort of thing with Agent Haven (Force Field/Elec) - Admittedly I'm a long-term sufferer of altitis and a roleplayer so it's more fun roleplaying in between shields and the odd ball lightning into controlled/aggro'd groups and I can usually switch to a more interesting character if invites/PuGs dry up.

However, being a supporter rather than an active debuffer can be good fun. I often find I'm able to rush in and hand out the inspirations mid-battle, heal from afar without being interrupted and provide moral support to teammates who are doing a good job.

Also, with plans to stick Detention thingy in later and getting the rather nifty Tesla Cage I should be able to provide a bit of light control.

I've also noticed a heck of a lot of Bubblers lately and I'm beginning to warm to the power. Perhaps I7s defence scaling is providing too good an opportunity to miss?

Wow, has it already been almost 3 months since I did this? How time flies.

So after warming to Dark Bubble after this respec above, I got to 26, and picked up my new power: Force Bomb (I think? Something Bomb anyway), which I really didn't have a clue about, and really regretted doing. So DB went back on the back-burner, so to speak. I notice with amusement how I had already decided to pick up Repusion Field, and that is now the power that I really wish that I had taken in place of this bomb power, which I really don't like.

I dusted him off last night, he was around 26.8 and thought 'Ok lets see'. His enhancements were all 25s, so endurance was going to be a problem, I figured. Set to LFT and waited. Usually I'm more out there and active finding teams, but with people saying that people with LFT still never get teams, I thought I'd try it.

Picked up in a couple of minutes, joining 7 others . I still say it works!

Anyway, they screamed through a couple of missions, and Dark Bubble was doing really well, I thought. Keeping everyone (who kept close) bubbled, running big bubble and my two leadership powers (Man and Tac) and hover, and still throwing out Aid Others and occasional blasts too. Had a ball in fact. A couple of times teammates fell over and Vengeance was great for that. I stimulanted a couple of people who were held or awakened (but still think this will be the first power to go when I respec next).

Dinged 27, put another slot in both Maneuvers and Tactics, so they have 3 slots with defence buffs and tohit buffs (respectively), and a single end reduction each.

So I think I'm pretty happy with him right now. I know that the bomb is apparently great in PvP (until I7?), but right now I'm very not interested in that, so no biggie.

Hopefully I'll get him out a bit more. I tend to go 4 or so levels then get depressed at the state of my enhancements and stop for a while. Will see how it goes.

Catch yas all, and anyone on union around my level I do love a big team .
