Well imho the claws produce a kinetic shockwave that damages the enemy. Doesn't make much sense but it's the best I could come up.
I always thought that you slashed at the air so fast that it torn a hole in the space time continuum and send out a wave of lethal quarks that on impact would deal high levels of damage and knock the target down.
IMO of course. 
It's preeeety much one of those sword shockwaves that anime loves so much, don't try to think about it too much. Unless you really enjoy applying the fridge logic until it makes sense.

Thanks to being magic origin, focus and shockwave are spells I throw and have nothing to do with my claws at all.
One day, BAB, one day you must find a way for us to have talons instead of back of hand mounted claws. Please oh please. (Yes, I know of the current limitation.)

I do wonder if BAB is hiding that one for now. If the tech is in for alternate animations on SS and MA, why not aid self, too?
Would an alternative animation make me rethink aid self? Gut feeling says no. The animation is too long. Cuts into my DPS too much.
On the other hand, I've seen a fully IOed out SR scrapper with aid self. It doesn't die unless it wants to.

Ive been playing my Claws Scrapper tonight, got him to level 19 and totally enjoying Focus - my first Scrapper with a ranged attack!
(previously played MA/SR and Broadsword/Shield)
Its a great power mechanically, nice damage, good range, knockdown, but one thing bothers me. What on earth am I actually doing?
I slash the air in front of me, make a cutting noise, and a guy 40 fet away falls over a second later. This power mechanic would make sense as a foot stomp and shockwave in a superstrength set, maybe even as a roar of some kind in claws, but this...
Can any of you Claws gurus help me out?
What do you think when you see your character do this?
