Destructables showing as "invalid target"
It is a known bug (well, known in the forums at any rate and I have bugged it myself). It acts as if the objects have to aggro before you can attack them. So far I haven't seen it happen if the object is guarded, only when it is solo. I've also heard you can initially damage the object with AOE or damage fields.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
I ended up bugging it myself too.
You describe it perfectly - solo, unguarded, seems to happen at further (beyond agro) range. The one thing I've seen that's different is that my AoEs (Rain of Fire and Caltrops) weren't making any difference.
Thanks for the reply though. Wonder how I missed the threads about this though...

I saw this myself the other night. Was wondering why I couldn't AS the item so that the explosion could give me a head start in the fight and it turned out that I had to attack the surrounding group first.
Yes, ive had it haopen with guarded objects too. When its aggroed either by an AoE or bevause its gaurds see you, uou can attack it.

MArcs:
The Echo, Arc ID 1688 (5mish, easy, drama)
The Audition, Arc ID 221240 (6 mish, complex mech, comedy)
Storming Citadel, Arc ID 379488 (lowbie, 1mish, 10-min timed)
One workaround, if you encounter this in someone else's arc, is to target through pets. (Of course if you have pets, you maybe don't need to hit it yourself at all... but it does work.)
And for a while things were cold,
They were scared down in their holes
The forest that once was green
Was colored black by those killing machines
Here's a funny one: I'm currently working on a mish that has a bunch of destructibles included to drop clues, like 32 of the guys (don't worry, there won't be 32 different clues!).
So in testing it, I targeted one and couldn't attack it, it came up saying "invalid target" like when you try and fire off at an ally. Then the same thing happened on another and another. Then I found some I could take out. Then I found out that some that gave me that message would suddenly change and be targetible and destructible after a couple of clicks trying to attack it.
I couldn't find any pattern in it, some worked out after one attempt, some after three or more, etc.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me? I've never heard of this happening and thought I'd ask about it here before I filed a bug report.
