Force Melee???
There's no command that I know of that will specifically force them into melee mode, but you can use goto to send them into melee range. From there, they're much more likely to figure it out.
Not a bad idea, actually helped a little more except for bigger fights. Still have to click somewhere to get them to go to that spot. Anyone know of a GOTO MY Target type command, so they they actually go to the target I have without clicking on the ground?
I don't think there is one... you can't tell them to Go To someplace without defining the place. You can bind Go To a key, but it will always bring up a Targeting mark that you need to click. Sorry.
At least now they seem to be following normal melee-preferred NPC AI - Which still dictates that only 2-3 enemies should be in melee, and the rest will hold back and use ranged attacks until one of the melee pets die.

My best advice for melee MMs is get in the mix. Depending on your secondary w/ BG mode on you're perfect safe to run into the center. On my Thug/FF I'd just bub and run into the center of the group. Rinse and repeat. On my Necro/Storm, I'd gale things into a corner. Trap them w/ hurricane and drop freezing rain on them.
You get the idea, personally I've see too many MMs playing it safe. You're one of the sturdiest ATs in the game, act like you are.
You can use the BUTTON macros.
For instance
/bind LSHIFT+LBUTTON "petcom_all goto agg"
This selects the location you are pointing at the same time you click, so there is no targetting mark.
Leave of the 'agg' if you don't want them to switch to aggressive, or change to passive or defensive to suit.
Really like Thugs as an MM. So started up 2 more being Necro and Ninja. Rather liking the Necro better currently, but what I am experiencing is that that 1 or 2 pets will run up and fight, while the others stay back at range. Throwing stars after star is not a good use for ninja, nor are the tier 2 Necro Knights blasting at range but not using thier swords. Is there a command of sorts to force them to run up. Bodyguard mode works good for solving this mot of the time, unless I get hit at range. Maybe a petcom_all/name somethign to force into melee.
