Earth/Ice ... rough build?

Mid_Boss

Posted

All,

I want to play an Earth/Ice Dominator. I just made her, and I'm ready to roll. However, I can't figure out a good power selection / level up build for this character. My basic problem is that the powers that are "must haves" in Earth come at awkward times in conjunction with Travel/Stamina and the powers I want from Ice.

Does anyone have a recommended build? I want to get both of my AoE attacks (Ice Sword Circle, Frost Breath) as soon as I can but that makes it where I dont even have more than 1 single target attack until level 35 (not counting Ice Bolt). I could do a LOT of teaming.

It is crazy how awkward it is.

Here is my build right now. I'm struggling. I'm having to put off Quicksand so I can get Stamina by 20. Normally I wouldnt sweat letting Stamina drop to 22 or 24, but I have to get Frost Breath by 22 in order to have it slotted before I get Volcanic Gasses, so I cant take Stamina after Frost Breath, because I wont have slots. That is really the crux of the problem.

Help?

Oh well. Darn. No suggestions. Well, I went and retweaked my build and I just made the (difficult for me) decision to push Frost Breath to 35 because I need a second single target attack early.

Blah.

I was actually just about to respond suggesting something more like your 2nd. I think you first build was too attack-light for an actual levelling build.

Ditching stone cages at the beginning so you could get ice sword was a good move IMO. It is at the beginning that you are starved for attacks, and your first build had you taking ice sword at 35 and ice slash at 47, which was a bit silly IMO.

Anyway, I like the 2nd build better.

Looks like a solid build. If I can just give you some counter points to contend with and ponder.

First Ice Sword Circle. At a low lvl this may not be the best place to pick that up. Its end cost is really high and if you are solo'ing it may not always be practical. If howerver your respecing later on to add it early then I say good work.

I do not see the reason for hover & fly? Unless your wanting it for certain sets. You can always buy a Temp Jet Pack for 10K and give yourself a free spot. Leadership is always nice.

Giving that I would take the single target immob at lvl 4 and take Ice Sword Circle @ 24, then power boost @ 28 instead of hover.

Note I haven't played a low lvl /ice with the new changes but I know ISC was mostly wasted on mobs pre 20. Great for teams not so much solo. Ymmv

All in all a very tight buid. Good choices just a few suggestions that you may wanna think about.

Enjoy the ride.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

As for Hover and Fly, its just for concept. But I have to have them.

As for Ice Sword Circle, I'd consider waiting, but then what else would my attack chain consist of? 2 singles vs 2 singles and an AoE ... but there isnt anything else to take really. I'll see how it goes. Hmm.

Thanks again to both of ya!

You want Power Boost earlier. As soon as it's available in fact. Not only does it double the duration of your mezzes but it also increases the -Acc debuff of earthquake for 10 seconds which makes a big difference when the brutes are too squishy to alpha and it's on your shoulders. I often lead off attacks with Power Boost > Earthquake > Stalagmites because Quake has a -defense debuff and makes sure Stalagmites, which has a low accuracy, is more likely to hit all enemies.

You also don't want to take Stone Cages, it ruins the mitigation of Earth Quake and Water Spout by making enemies immune to knock down. Water Spout, unlike Tornado, is knockup, not knockback so it's not going to throw your enemies all over the place. Quick Sand and Earthquake do an awesome job at keeping enemies in one spot and keeping them on their butts. Not only that but Cages has terrible damage and huge graphical effects making it hard for team mates to pick out targets in enemy groups. All around, it's a terrible power thats the only stain in otherwise pristine Earth Control.

Also, you can't use Stalagmites while off the ground, so that makes Hover and Fly more of a liability in battle than a help. And taking Hibernation is a good idea since dom attacks use more endurance now than they use to.

Summon Coralax and Chilling embrace can both be easily replaced if they're not your thing. I enjoy Chilling because Quicksand only slows movement, not recharge rate and Coralax... well... I enjoy having a pet for a distraction when fighting a boss battle. Never know when your mezzes will have a miss streak. This build has great damage and awesome control. You wont be disappointed.

Well, I want my other basics first. I played a Fire/Ice to level 36, and I took PB about the same time, and earth has more control, so I should be OK.

You also don't want to take Stone Cages

[/ QUOTE ]

I do want to take it, for fun and for concept, and for various other reasons. I have 3 Earth Controllers at level 50, 2 of them in the 40s, and 1 Earth Dom in the 40s (who has Water Spout) and I'm aware of the ramifications and the details. I just want the power for fun.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

True. However, I prefer Fly+SS for zone movement, and my concept calls for having Fly (not just a travel pack), and also I sometimes hover for brief periods in missions despite the Stalagmites issue, or I touch down and use it then lift again. But again, its really about character concept. I dont want to drop these.

I do wish I had room for Hibernate, but that's OK. I'll tough it out and work on my end reduction IO frankenslotting, recovery set bonuses, etc.

I do appreciate the advice, but because I'm a filthy stinky (perfect for Earth) concept player, I gotta have some of these "less efficient" powers in my build for this character.

Thanks for taking the time to comment tho, I do appreciate it!
