hey all, so i know i recently posted in this forum, but i have yet another question, so my brother is a dark/dark corr who has MASSIVE amounts of -to hit

now then i am a fortunata who is easily soft capped

we also team with a bane and in the end we are all soft capped with my fort being well over the cap, now then my question is....

if i have 45% defense i have a certain chance of being hit..
if they have their to hit debuffed to the floor then they have a certain chance of hitting...

Do these values combine to make someone unhittable?

thank you to all who reply and i hope my question is clear

What Crime said. You're never unhittable (well... unless you're using a power that puts you in an unaffected state )

Your friend's tohit debuffs will only help your soft-capped toon when the enemy has +tohit buffs. Accuracy is another story though. Enemies with accuracy above 1.0x will have a slightly higher than 5% chance to hit you no matter how much defense or tohit debuffs are in play. As you'll see in Arcana's guide, higher level and higher ranking opponents get accuracy buffs. It isn't until they are MUCH higher level than you that they get tohit buffs as well.

You have the right idea. -ToHit and +Defense do combine to make you "less hitable." The thing is there's an "always chance To Hit of 5%" so you can never have less than 5% chance to hit.

So, even con minion. They have a 50% chance to hit you. Now subtract your 45% Defense. That leaves 5% to hit. That's at the smallest 5% to hit, so there's no point to pile on more. Hence the term "soft cap." You can't effectively get more defense than that, even though you can still make the Defense number bigger.

So now lets make that minion an AV with a +35% chance to hit you (made up number). Instead of starting with a 50% chance to hit like the minion, the AV starts with an 85% chance. Now your 45% Defense reduces the AVs To Hit to 40%.

That's where more defense, or stacked up To Hit debuff comes in handy. The "soft cap" is actually a minion soft cap. It's not the cap for anything better. Even just a higher level mish and the yellow or orange minions will have +5% or + 10% To Hit you. You need 55% defense to floor the latter. Or a bigass To Hit debuff.

Actually, no. Higher level and higher ranked opponents get accuracy buffs, not tohit buffs. At least for the first five levels above you, if I recall correctly. Arcana's guide has all the math and a better explanation that I would give here. Worth a look. Short version: The soft-cap for an even con minion is the soft-cap for a +5 LT. Defense over 45% won't matter unless he's packing tohit buffs as well.

And some NPCs DO have tohit buffs of their own and a great many dish out defense debuffs. If you're not an SR with 95% defense debuff resistance, it pays to be over the soft-cap if you want to mix it up with Cimeroran traitors, for example.
