The requirements aren't even close to similar. WoW is the most popular MMO for several reasons. But the main reason is that it can be played on almost any system. Even laptops that have low ram and a poor graphics solution built into the motherboard rather than having a dedicated video processor can play WoW. CoH pushes even good gaming systems to their limits if you max out the settings.
If you go Here and download and run CoH Helper then we can look at your specs and tell you what you might need to do or if playing at all on that system is even possible. Once you have the results you can either post them in this thread or start a new one in the Tech issues section. The Tech section will give you more of a response since some of those who are the best at this sort of diagnosis never venture outside that area.

I've run guild wars on this laptop too, and run a CoH beta on my old computer which was worse off graphics-wise.
There was a graphic update around Issue 6. It put "working, sorta" machines into the "nope, not today, not ever" category.

You might just want to try waiting it out, if you haven't already.
I get pretty terrible start-up times on CoH, and I get the exact same problem as you. In about a minute, it should show the log-in screen background, then in another couple seconds show you the actual log-in panel.

I tried waiting, a whole lot of nothing happened :S I noticed while I was in the task manager that it was taking up 133,000K of memory...that can't be right, can it?
That's way too low. How much ram do you have in that system?
You could try running C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityofHeroes.exe -project coh -console (assuming you installed it to the default location) and watch the output from the COH Console and see where it gets stuck, and tell us here (unfortunately, you can't copy the text from it, you'd have to manually re-write it).

Try making sure that both Windows firewall (Under control panel - either it will be it's own icon among 20+, or choose the "security" catagory which will then link to it) and any independent firewall you have running (Zonealarm, Norton, McAffee all have them) are set to allow City of Heroes.

Heya.
I just bought and downloaded CoH/CoV from the main site and upon trying to open it for the first time all I get is a black screen with the hourglass and my start bar showing along the bottom. If I do a ctrl-alt-del it tells me that the program is not responding. Is there a known fix to this? I'm hoping I didn't just waste a bunch of money on a game I can't even play :S
I used to play WoW on this same laptop, so I should be able to handle the graphics, since the requirements are pretty similar I think.
