IOS
Follow the link in my sig to the wiki
Edit:
If you were on a team full of people making fun of you because you didn't have IOs, you were on a team full of complete and utter idiots. An IO'd out character does not mean the player is any *good.*
I'd rather have a team full of people on TOs that know how to play and have fun doing it than a team full of idiots with a five mile long list of set bonuses.
Edit 2:
To touch on specific questions:
[ QUOTE ]
i get confused on how to get them, what they are, how to manage them, etc.

I still say go to the wiki, but for a readers digest version:
IOs are Invention Origin enhancements. They, like TOs (Training Origin,) DOs (Dual Origin) and SOs (Single origin) are enhancements you slot into your powers to increase various attributes.
Unlike the previously mentioned TOs/DOs/SOs, though, IOs do not expire. If you slot a level 10 Accuracy (for instance,) at level 50 it will still be providing a bonus (where a regular level 10 enhancement would be useless by 14.)
Also, IOs cannot be combined - if you try to drag, say, a level 30 Acc IO on top of that level 10 IO, where a regular enhancement would attempt to combine and (if successful) give you a level "30+" enhancement, an IO will just replace it. IOs cannot combine with other enhancements.
There are two "subsets," if you will, of IOs:
- Common IOs.
These are just like the regular enhancements you get, being just plain damage, accuracy, and the like.
- Set IOs
These are what people were probably making comments about. Set IOs come in, well, a set of a specific type (melee, range, AOE and the like,) and each set is named. Each IO in a set can enhance from one to four attributes (say, Damage, or Damage/Accuracy, Damage/Accuracy/Recharge, or Dam/Acc/Rech/Endurance.) If it enhances more than one, the value for each is diminished - but not cut in half. (Again, follow the link.)
While you can only have one type of IO *from a set* in a specific power, you can mix and match sets in a power (aka Frankenslotting,) and can have multiples of the same set across a build. (For instance, Crushing Impact, a Melee set, might have a Damage and Damage/Acc in a power. You could not put another Damage/Acc from Crushing Impact in that same power, but you could put it in another power.)
Why worry about sets? Because of set bonuses.
When you have more than one piece of a set slotted in a power, you will get a bonus to something. While at the wiki, search for "Invention Origin Enhancement Sets." For instance, two pieces of a set might give you 5% Regeneration. Three pieces might add 1.5% Recovery. Four pieces, 5% Defense and so on. Each bonus at a specific value can stack up to five times. While there's no limit on the number of times you can use a specific set over an entire character (short of having appropriate powers,) the bonuses dont' stack past five times.
(The exception is the rare Purple set, dropping only from enemies 47+ that can drop recipes - these you can have only one of each set piece in per build.)
How to get them -
You can buy them at Wentworths.
You can buy them from Invention tables.
They will drop from enemies as you defeat them.
To use:
Open the recipe, it will list the salvage. Missing salvage (and INF) is in red. If it's all lit up, you can make it at any invention table, such as those in the University.
First: ParagonWiki
Invention System
Invention Origin Enhancements
Consignment House (aka Wentworths/BlackMarket)
And several other articles on the Wiki. Also, don't forget to do the University Invention tutorial (Steel Canyon or Cap Au Diable depending on your side of the game) at 10+, and read the informant at the Black Market/Went Worths for info about them.
I'm sure someone will be along soon with a nice detailed summary of the Invention System
Edit:As Bill basically said, IOs were a later addition to the game, and the game isn't balanced around having them. You can play just fine with normal Training Origin, Dual Origin, and Single Origin enhancements (I know a few people that run without any enhancements in the high levels... although personally I think they're a bit loony )

Go to the University in Steel Canyon and run the tutorial. It explains Invention Origin enhancements, and allows you to create one. It also gives you a badge.

Get better teammates.
No really. There are many people in this game that never mess with IOs at all and stick with SOs. Inventions were added as a new play element to further customize characters, but the game wasn't made any harder with their introduction. The game is still balanced around enhancing powers with SOs and a non-IO build is perfectly fine.
I haven't played in awhile. In fact, I've been away since before Inventions were in game. I think I remember a statesman quote awhile ago as for a reason why you can't make items in CoH/CoV when he was giving an interview stating something like: "Why do you feel you have to play only games where you can make something?" Or something like that. I don't remember the exact quote.
Anyway, I don't have any IOs either.
If people are going to make fun of you over something so trivial, they're not worth teaming with.
or as i am guessing Enhancments. dont want to bother yall with questions, so wondering where can i find a guide that exlpains them? i get confused on how to get them, what they are, how to manage them, etc... i was on a team and the people were making fun of me cause apparently i dont have any ios...
so if any clarification would be hot.
thanks
