typed damage and defense/resists
You're attacked with a 'fire blast' from a behemoth 30yds away that does 100 smashing, 100 fire damage and is typed as 'range, smashing, fire'. The following occurs:
Your defense checks to see whether your ranged, smashing, or fire defense is highest. Lets say you were 10% ranged, 30% smashing, 15% fire - it would use 30% as your defense number.
If you are hit, lets say you have 90% smashing and 10% fire resistance.
100 smashing damage becomes 10.
100 fire damage becomes 90.
You take 100 total damage from the 200 damage "Fire Blast" that is a ranged, smashing and fire attack.
This is my understanding, although I haven't done a ton of research around it. Keep in mind there exist untyped attacks.
You are correct on everything you just said.
Well, except that I don't believe there are any truly untyped attacks. I believe that they are all typed as something, however, some don't have a damage type, but they will have a positional, and some have a damage type, but not a positional.

Mmm. Annoying rikti non-positional attacks make my /sr scrapper (capped to range, melee and aoe - but not to psi) cry.

Hamidon is untyped(and a major pain in the butt because of it), but as far as I know, only Hamidon is.

I am a little confused on one point here. Say a baddie attacks with an attack that does 100 points of S/L and another 100 points of Fire.
You have 90% Resistance to S/L and no resistance to Fire. Do you take a total of 110 points of damage (10 S/L and 100 Fire) or does the fact that *part* of the attack has S/L allow you to apply your Resistance to *all* of the attack, and only take 20 points of damage?
I had though the 90% S/L only applies to the *part* of the attack that is S/L but the posts I am reading make it sound like that is not so?
Similary, if a baddie attacks with an attack that does 100 points of S/L and another 100 points of Fire, and you have 45% Def vs S/L (and 0 Def vs Fire) would that be 110 points of incoming damage or 20?
Thanks.
