Spines/Fire or Fire/Shield

Background: I have a 50 spines/fire that I'm mid-reworking and am debating just creating a fire/shield instead.

Target: No higher than +2's, large groups solo, and solid ae damage on teams. Not single target damage.

Thoughts: Need higher defense on my spines/fire (I could hit ~40% melee without gimping the build badly, but sooo expensive) and debating just swapping to a fire/shield.

I think I found a build I like. However, my end/sec drops to 3.0 and my global recharge drops to 32.5% ... but solid defense?

Oh, and it means getting 4 oblits and a TOD set... blerg.

I <3 my Spines/Fire. Slotted the way I am, I'm getting my heal back just in time, no need for Consume ( I use it as another attack) and doing fine with your Target Group. I'll PM it to you from Mids if you want to take a look at it.

I just finished building out the offensive portion of my spines/fire with melee defense at close to 39%.

I take too much of a beating and it's kind of disappointing.

I'll keep it for now.

What I love about it is the heal comes back quick. I can also deal a boatload of damage with caltrops, build up, burn, spine burst, ripper and throw spines. Huzzah.

What I don't like about it is that the S/L resists are only at 52% and 40% isn't good enough even against +1 lieuts. If I want to play it safe I pop a purple and an orange.

I was just hoping he'd perform better.

Here's my build in case you're interested:

I hear ya, I've been agonizing about tanker vs scrapper for 3 days - I want scrapper damage, but I crave tanker survivability. I think I'm going to go the Dark/Fire/Pyre tank route; 46% S/L, 41% Melee, 30% Range, 25% AOE, tanker resist levels (weak: En 33 toxic 31 rest ~50+) with 3 AOE's and great self heal

Of course, -tohit, energy and slow kryptonites (relatively speaking) and my main concern is loss of endurance and recharge, but at the moment my build is +1.87EPS and I've been running with +1.99EPS... the only change in attack chain being Combustion goes from costing 8.5 end to 11 end. And no single target attacks worth clicking.

Now that I think about it, really a f/f/p tanker with capped S/L defense ... blerg.

My build above is going to be useful in more places, but... meh. This would kill faster (fiery embrace being *huge*) and just as safe in many areas. Slotted for sets and did this in ~3m so it's not a 'final' build.

Just throwing this out there: for farming, couldn't you fight fire-only mobs? You're at the fire resist cap, and even though you didn't build for it there's also almost 13% def against fire as well. Obviously teams tend to fight s/l mobs but you won't be taking as many hits in those situations.

I have a spines/fire I'm currently leveling for exactly this purpose, but I have to admit she's still kind of squishy. I suppose a fire tank would be safer, although how does the damage compare?

Leveling a Spines/Fire as well and I just can't decide. Do I want to gimp some of my build for Defense or do I wanna go for Rech/HP and just pop Lucks.. Decisions decisions..

I have a 50 Shield/Fire/Pyre Tank that is great but he lacks the damage of a Scrap.
