Returning player - Looking for strong leveling duo

Hello, all! I played this game years ago. I'm taking a break/extended leave from WoW, and I thought I'd give this game a go again. My son and I are both looking for a great duo that will have synergy.

I saw a few threads on this, and the one that stood out to me was 2xEmp/Sonic defenders.

"Each Emp Fortitudes the other.
Each Emp Clear Minds the other.
Each Emp Adrenaline Boosts the other.
Alternate Regeneration and Recovery Auras.

No stamina is needed. You have Recovery Aura. You don't need to slot, take or even use the heals once you hit Fortitude. Sonic attacks from defenders stack minus resistances, recharge and fire very quickly. Enemies will melt before your eyes."

I think the Emp primary benefits are obvious. I'm trying to understand why you would want double sonic secondaries. Do the debuffs stack? My howl and his howl, would they both additively debuff our target? If yes, that does seem very strong.

Are there cases where it might be better for one or both to be Emp/Something else? And if so, what would that other secondary be? Years ago, I played a blaster, so I'm a bit wary of trying to dps with 2 defenders, but I guess it might work ok with the added survivability, buffs, and debuffed damage.

So far I've been talking about leveling/PVE. How would such a duo be in PVP?

Don't know about PvP, but the Defender duo you have in mind would work very well in PvE. And yes, all of the resist debuffs will stack.

Just Fortitude won't soft-cap your defenses though, so you will want to take and slot at least one or two heals. For a duo, I can't see you needing Absorb Pain though. Just keep in mind that enemies will get lucky and get through your defense and kill you.

If you're wary about the DPS, you could go Rad or Kin instead. I think you'll be fine with the damage bonus from Fort and the resist debuffs from your attacks though.

One thing: try out Sonic Blast before committing to that duo. The sound effects aren't for everyone and can seriously annoy some.

Two Empaths is really that good. Both run and slot Manouvers for an additional 11% Defence (- about 35% with Fortitude?)

Assault also works well here at +37.5% damage combined.

I've PvP'd casually with my SG once, using two Empaths (post Adrenalin Boost).
Despite the fact I was kind of hampered by dual-boxing for the first time in PvP, I put in a pretty good showing, and absolutley slaughtered the opposition in a 3 vs 3 Arena match.

So I can offer anecdotal evidence that some of the awesomeness translates to PvP. This was all befroe the recent workover of PvP by the way.

And yes, dual Sonic attacks means over 100% Res debuff on your joint taregt of choice very quickly.

Repeat Offenders (we who have be blamed for villains getting Pain Domination not Empathy) has an All-Empath Defender SG.

It rocks. Once you have fort, you are required to Fort the two below you at all times.

It steamrolls

Thanks for the feedback! We flew pretty quickly to 9 last night and had a lot of fun. It would've gone even faster, but it took some time re-learning the basics. Our dmg seemed pretty good. I do wish Howl had a quicker recharge time--between 2 opening Howls, most whites would be almost dead but not quite. I am guessing in a few more levels with better enhancements and buffs it will be even better.

One followup question. Can anybody explain what AE is? In other MMOs, AE meant rounding up packs of bad guys and using Area of Effect abilities to get them. Here I see AE is Architect Entertainment (thanks ParagonWiki!). I've read some posts of people complaining about users doing these and not the old stuff. 1 - why are these better than the regular old missions? and 2 - if they are better, why do people complaining about them?

People are using AE for farming enemies that either don't attack or don't do much damage but still give good XP.

There are really good stories to be played in it if you look, but the farming is the most vocal in broadcasts.

Also alot of the new players coming out of it don't know anything beyond it, like enhancements, zones, or really that enemies can fight back and be tough.

AoE - Area of Effect, usually in reference to damage.

AE - Architect Entertainment, part holodeck/danger room, part arcade. A place where you can get player created missions for somewhat normal XP but instead of loot you get tickets, like in an arcade, that you can trade in for loot.
