Mysterious file size bloat

One of my published missions was sitting comfortably at 96%. It contains a custom Crey group (because all-tank spawns at 45+ are annoying and tedious to fight), consisting of two custom minions and random Crey minion, lieutenant and boss.

I tried to edit the customs' powers, to make use of custom power selections. When I did this, the file shot up from 96% to 102%. Abandoning the changes kept the inflated file size, since the new, bigger minions had already been saved. So there's nothing I can do now except remove one of the minions. I tried reverting them back to their "standard" settings...no dice.

Solutions anyone? I would really like to be able to keep both minions.

Did you make any other changes to custom critters that are used in that arc? The act of editing an arc tells the system "Go incorporate any changes to custom critters or groups that happened outside the editor".

I haven't looked at what happens when you customize powers for a critter - it seems like that would increase the space requirements, but 3% per critter seems like an awful lot.

It didn't seem to increase the space requirements when I edited the allies in the same arc. Like I said, reverting them to standard didn't fix the problem. I never edit anything outside the mission editor, unless I'm deleting custom groups or characters.

Also, for some reason now I keep mapserving trying to edit the arc...maybe I shouldn't be doing it with my Architect commlink from Siren's Call, but it was fine before I started messing with the custom group.

I've had to delete the original minions and recreate them, since trying to edit them kept crashing the game. The new ones still push the file size up over the limit, even though I recreated them with the same costume...some weirdness going on here.

For some reason these guys are huge, they're taking up 6% of the file size each, just like pre-i15 customs did, even though their costumes are a simple suit without any of the extra doodads that normally eat file size, and their bios are one sentence.

6% is the normal size for a custom critter - I've never seen a critter take up significantly less than that.

Well the custom group from my other arc takes up 38% of the file size, it has 9 critters in it, including an EB that takes up 7% or so on his own. So the remaining critters would be taking up about 4% each. They shrank significantly when i15 came out. I haven't edited their costumes since though.

The problematic guys were taking up less space until I edited them, including their costumes, as their sleeves had inexplicably been changed from "suit long" to "blazer." Then the file size got bigger. When I tried to edit them again I kept mapserving and crashing, I had to delete and remake them.

The pre-edit critters were in the arc before. The arc was at 96% or so. I played it today, they were spawning fine. The new, bigger critters, that push the arc up to 102%, are practically identical to the old ones, except for some custom power selections, which don't increase the amount of space a custom critter takes up (I have added custom power selections to critters since i15. The file size did not increase at all. In the local mission file, their custom power set is listed as "39"...I'm guessing each combination of powers has a pre-set number assigned to it.)

Verifying files didn't help. The arc is still playable without the second custom critter, just that one mission is a bit more annoying for a level 45+ character.

Was there a patch today? (still at work) I hope they didn't break the compression again, I'm getting really sick of not being able to truly use all the space allowed because the game keeps changing it's mind on how much space things really take up.

Sigh....Just went back to try to see if I can fix the arc, and the description now warns that the arc contains Elite Bosses. It does not.

Edit: Never mind, I am so dumb. The Elite Boss was accidentally added to another group used in the arc. I made him for another arc that I've since abandoned and totally forgot about him.

Don't panic. Your arcs are fine.

I just had something bizarre happen while editing a published arc.

I was transitioning from one name to another for a custom critter (which is somewhat painful to do in the editor alone, but that's a separate issue). Anyway, for a short time I had my critter in the relevant group twice, once under the old name and once under the new. This part was expected.

The extra entry came from the mission in memory - I had already renamed it on disk - but of course it re-added everything from the mission file as I edited. Again expected. But here's the weird part.

I had to manually remove the extra critter entry from the relevant group file. In that file, all the costume parts for the critter were listed twice - once under their normal costume part names, and once under part names that were prefixed with "Diff".

It was weird. Anyone know what all that extra costume information was about? I double checked and thankfully none of the critters I actually want to use have it, but it would essentially double the size of any critter - so from 6% to about 12% of file size.
