Map Server Error and Modem Reset

Hello!

So I've got this cute little (ok, not so little) problem. I want to say about 2 weeks ago (I can't remember exactly when it started, but its been getting progressively worse), I started getting those cute "Lost Connection to Map Server" error. It has recently grown into a huge nightmare. Now, not only does it give me the error, but it also *resets* my modem. Literally, resets, all those cute blinking lights go off and come back on, one by one. If I am lucky, they come back on quickly enough that I can keep my connection and keep playing, but more often than not, I completely lose my connection and have to re-log in.

Here's a wee bit of background information: I'm currently in Grafenwoehr, Germany, on post in the barracks using TKS internet service. Before I moved in country (a little over a month ago) I had no problems. When I first got everything hooked up, I had no problems.

It only happens when I play CoX. I can surf the internet and play WoW all day long for all it cares, but when I play CoX it starts giving me problems. I have swtiched out my cable modem (used to be a Motorola SBV5121E) to a Linksys CM100 Cable Modem. Still having the problem. I also briefly added a router to the mix, and still had the problem, along with insane amounts of lag. Promptly got rid of the router. So I'm currently set up with wall jack -> Cable Modem -> Computer.

I've also had the thought that it's my computer. She is almost 4 years old now and almost literally dying. She can no longer decide exactly speed RAM she has (She started at 3.1 GHz (i think) and now fluctuates from 1.2 to 2.4 and anywhere in between). And, her video card I think is starting to cough up blood, every so often she randomly picks out a column of pixels on my screen and turns them all a color. I've currently got 11 columns of basically dead pixels on my screen.

I'm not sure if *any* of that random information will help, but if it does, so much the better. If it doesn't I'm sorry for having made you read it. If you need other information, feel free to ask.

If I am remembering Cable modems correctly. Isn't the speed limited by the number of people on the line? What kind of speeds are you looking at.

City of heroes has required unreasonable amounts of bandwidth since Valentines day...I think it's three years now? It's a bug no one ever admits to but it's there. That's why you cna play pretty much any other MMO out there with Dial up with little problems but City will knock you off.

It's a cable modem, not dialup. It gets 100 Mbps. And i'm the only one using the modem.

I sorta understand what you're saying about the bandwidth, but I dont think my bandwidth amount has every really changed. I *think* I had a cable modem back at Ft Hood (where I came from) on which I played CoH just fine. I'll double check that it wasn't a DSL connection, though I'm not sure if (or what) the difference is between the two. I know for sure though, that I don't have dialup!

That whole deal with the weirdo computer you have is the most likely problem... it's giving you fits with video, what's stopping it from giving you fits with the networking?

Even at that, I think I'd rather have a stable computer than that flake monster. No offense, of course, if it works for you...

Also, it would highly explain the Co* problems vs the (the game what's name shall not be mentioned)'s ability to not give you problems... seeing as how Co* is about 10 times or more the program than that other one.

I've said it before, Co* is my gold standard to break computers. If a computer run Co* for 20 minutes, even just standing still in Grandville, then it passes, because Co* can usually break a machine in 5 minutes, easily. (The game what's name shall not be mentioned) is not nearly the monster to a computer that Co* is. Not Flight Simulator, not Crysis, nothing else I've found will kill a computer like Co* can, and if the program can, it won't do it nearly as fast.

I was sorta hoping it wasn't the computer itself. It's been quite loyal to me during my trips to the Desert and back again for close to 4 years now. And no offense taken, I incidentally have a new computer on the way. Thank you guys for the information about CoX being such a.... computer breaker. I never knew that it was such a.... disaster.

And... sorry if I broke some.... taboo with 'that game'. Its one of my other onliners that I play, and frankly, the one I thought was most consuming when it comes to computer breakage-ness.

I guess I shall simply hope that my beautiful package shall get through the mail and over here in a timely manner before I bury this sweet little one. :/

No you didn't break any taboo! It's just just a thing I do. I'm not real up on (the game what's name shall not be mentioned.) Didn't like the experience in total... but that's just me. Weird, right?

Well, that, and the Harry Potter reference.

I hope you get your new box soon, and you spend plenty times in Co*! Take care!

Note that cable internet service is inherently a shared medium. The maximum transfer rate is the total maximum transfer rate shared out for everyone on that run of cable / connected to the same device on the cable company's end. Depending on how things are wired, that might be just you (very rare), a few apartments, everyone on a floor or in a building, an entire block, or worse.

The cable companies frequently try to reduce costs by putting in only the minimum amount of capacity to serve a mix of ordinary users. In other words, they tend to assume that many of their users will just be doing light internet surfing and checking email. When you have a situation where many of the users are heavy users (streaming video, online gaming, etc.), performance often suffers.

It's entirely possible for performance at peak times to be worse than dialup. Some companies are trying to manage the problem by putting in rate limiting or traffic shaping software, which doesn't improve the total bandwidth but attempts to share it out in a hypothetically more balanced fashion. Depending on you and your neighbor's usage, either the presence or absence of this could be a problem.

Also note that cable internet service is asymmetric; there is far less upstream capacity than downstream. Online gaming and VOIP consume considerably more upstream capacity in proportion, compared to web browsing, file downloading, or the like.
