Motherboard recommendation

This is somewhat of a sequel to my thread pertaining to my motherboard being unable to detect my video cards.....lol. I contemplated just getting a new computer at the end of that thread, but I had second thoughts.....

So pretty much, I'm just gonna look for a new motherboard. I'm not looking to buy a new processor for it at the moment, so can anyone recommend a motherboard that can use the processor I have already? (I have an AMD Athlon (tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz)

I browsed other forums for an answer, but wow, even the simplest questions on most of them can turn into flame wars.

(I am aware that I will have to reinstall my OS as the one on my computer now came pre-installed.)

Assuming you want keep the POS HP case, I would look at the Asus M3A76 or something similar. If you would rather reassemble the PC in a new case using existing parts, you have a lot more options (with the motherboard as well as with any future upgrades).

Got beat by Doomlord because I'm talkative. Oh well, I'm still posting it!

Kinda wish ya had asked this in your other thread. People are going to need that info from there. However, I'll help a little:

Going off the specs for your case/mobo combination, as well as what the old motherboard was set up for:

I did a search in Newegg as best I could. AMD people might be better suited to be absolutely sure I got it right, but here's the results of my search:

MicroATX form factor
240 Pin Memory (DDR2)
Athlon 64 X2

My particular requirements, others may vary:
Gigabyte
AMD chipset.

The results:

And my pick:

Although this will limit you to two sticks of memory. If you want 4, then this one:

Now, again, I'm a pretty strict guy when it comes to certain things. I'm not an AMD CPU guy, I'm an Intel/Intel guy. I only use Gigabyte. For *years* that policy has never steered me wrong.

However, as you want to stick with the chip you have, I see no reason to compromise on my motherboard maker selection. And given that I've seen some... wonky... things when NVidia chipsets are used, I figured the AMD chipset is the way to go. Used to be AMD/Via, but now it's AMD/AMD.

Others will likely point you to an Asus or something. (as has been done. Heh.) It's your call. I'm just very picky about motherboards and such.

Overload, right? Sorry... Hope it helps!

Okay, so I have my choices narrowed down to Doomlord's suggestion and your 3rd recommendation.

I will have to either borrow (or most likely purchase) a version of Windows Vista (I'd go back to XP if I could find it) because as said earlier, my PC came with it, and as said it the other thread, trying to use a new motherboard on that would be......problematic.

Guess I needed a small break from the game anyway....lol.

So I'll be back in a few, quite possibly posting asking how to install Windows from a disc. It'll be my first time ever doing it.
