Long break, have some questions if you could

I recently came back to the game after a long break. I got my Storm/archery defender up to 50, but now I want to try something else as I find storm doesn't get to use alot of tools since most groups don't want to bother with positioning for the knockbacks.

I really like the defender of all the archetypes, but I'm not sure what would be a good choice at this point. I want to be able to heal some, I like debuffing and I'd like to do some AE damage. I don't really want any knockbacks if that can be helped. I prefer targetted AE abilities when possible and I'm not wanting to take archery again.

I could go through the different abilities of each class and spend alot of time researching, but I think the best route is to ask those with experience what they think would be some of the better choices to fit what I'm looking for. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend:

Dark Miasma or Radiation Emission as a primary. Both debuff, heal and can amplify a team's AoE damage since their powers have area based -res.

Another choice is Kinetics, though you can have some knockback if you take repel. Kinetic buffs are well known, but their debuffing capabilities are very underrated.

Any secondary except energy blast (since you don't like kb). Of the secondaries, I think sonic and ice are the strongest, though they tend to be single target focused.

For something for AoE focused, dark blast wouldn't be a bad choice and Dark/Dark or Rad/Dark would be solid choices. For kinetics, electric blast (for sapping) and radiation blast (because of the -def) are good choices.

There is no heal, but Cold Domination has a hit point buff. It also has some debuff like you get in radiation. You get sleet which is the same as freezing rain, and heat loss which works like fulcrum shift except transfers endurance. The ice shields are nice, albeit there are those that don't like what the appearance is like.

I highly suggest doing Dar/Dark/Dark build. I chose this and its highly effective. I have about 5 to 6 toggles going all the time (make sure you pick up Stamina). And when in a group, having SB from a KIN, you are unstoppable. I am highly pleased with this build.

Yeah, you want Dark Miasma: Dark/Ice, Dark/Dark, or Dark/Rad for AoE damage. They're all great combinations, too, so no worries there.

Rad Emission is lame unless you're solo or fighting AVs. There, I said it.

Something Defendery that you may want to look into is Thermal. Sure, it's not a Defender set, but it has heals, debuffs, shields, rez, mez protection, and you can either put it on a Corruptor for attacks (and high damage) or Controller with Controls which you can do AoE Controls with damage.

Just something that's probably not going to be suggested by anyone else.

If you really like storm but really hate knockback, Cold seems like it should be at the top of your list.

As for secondaries, well, the best sets all have knockbacks or scatter in them. /Elec and /Rad are the only knockless scatterless options. So I'd urge you to accept at least a little knockback from your secondary.

Controlled cone knockback like (Dark) Torrent and (Sonic) Shockwave is handy. Aimed correctly, they're an excellent placement tool, with a bonus of more debuff from Torrent or decent AoE damage from Shockwave. With /Ice, pair Ice Storm with a slow or immobilize to eliminate scatter, and Freeze Ray and Bitter Freeze Ray grant temporary immunity to knockbacks as well. Heck, even Psi skipping TK Blast or Archery skipping Explosive Arrow are still solid sets -- I skipped TK Blast on a Dark/Psi for concept reasons and did just fine spamming WD all day.
