Are there any mid-game mutant mob groups?
I think certain Council will drop mutation enhancements, but the 30s on the hero side really have a dearth of enemy groups, not counting the mobs in Croatoa:
CoT
Council
Crey
DE
Freakshow
Nemesis
Rikti
Arachnos
That's pretty much every group you'll fight between 30 and 40 unless, like I said, you hit up Croatoa. If you really want mutation SOs, I'd suggest running some AE arcs and buying them with tickets.

The enhancement drop tables for Council were changed to Tech when the Invention system was introduced. Positron commented that it was missed in the patch notes, but they had been using the drop tables from the 5th Column. The Devs felt the 5th was more mutation based, but the Council was more Tech.
Of course, now that the 5th are back they seem to be using the Council "Tech" drop tables
To the OP: If you get the day job Storekeeper/ Smuggler you'll get a random Enhancement drop on any mission complete. Not a big help, but at least a small chance better.

I've been in Croatoa but those are all magic based (from what I've seen). Punks.
So the short answer seems to be: Don't make mutant origin characters. I know I can buy SOs from the AE (thanks for the suggestion, though) but it looks like I have pretty much zero chance of bettering my character... "naturally".
It's a bit of a bummer since I'm trying to avoid leveling via the AE on this character to make sure I go through 1-50 the traditional route at least the once and know what the various zones & mob groups have to offer.

So turn off XP while you're in the AE. Then you can just use the AE to get tickets, influence, and (if you're in a SG) prestige; all without worrying about outleveling your regular contacts.

All my characters
Aside from the rare Lost radio mission (and those are starting to populate themselves with Rikti), I can't think of or find one. This is at lvl 31.
I finally had a contact who was billed as "dealing with mutants" (José someone-or-another from Founders Falls) -- and he sends me on missions involving Devouring Earth (science) and Council (technology). Erm... those aren't exactly mutant groups.
I'm slowly converting to IOs and Sets but it sure would be nice if I could collect some SO's to plug in the holes while I'm playing and not have to rely on dropping influence for them all.
I'm never playing a mutant origin character again. Swimming in Tech/Sci/Magic and even Natural enhancements, though.
