First Stalker

Hi All,

I recently hit 50 blue side so I thought I'd give villains a try. I really enjoy scrappers so I felt the pull towards stalkers. At first I tried DM/Nin as everyone is always talking about DM is the single target king. I got the char to level 10 but I just couldn't get past hating Shadow Maul and being rooted for so long, especially when it missed. So I deleted the char and decided to give energy melee a chance as I'd always been interested in it blue side. I was thinking of using regen or willpower as my secondary but the lack of quick recovery left me not want to go down those lines. I didn't find DA, ElA, or EA to be appealing and knowing that SR is a late bloomer and tight build I decided to go with /Nin again. So I've gotten the stalker up to 14 and I'm really enjoying it. I've put together a build that I'd like some advice. After looking at mids I've noticed that while I seem to have some decent defense, I have no resistances outside of S/L. Is this going to be something that bites me in the end or makes me not want to level this char when I get a few more levels into it?

Anyways, to the build, any advice that can be given would be great.

I won't comment on the EM, side but for your secondary, you can really skip Smoke Flash and Blinding Powder. Caltrops is a much better than either of these options (it offers quite good mitigation and can be stacked). Also, I see you skipped your tier 9, Retsu. It's a good power, worth taking esp. if you are not going to soft-cap defense. I wouldn't bother with the fighting pool either, you really won't need it.

Oh and I wouldn't bother with all of the endurance reduction in your defense toggles, you really won't need it once you get Stamina.

Since your mez protection doesn't offer -KB, a -KB IO is a nice idea. I've purchased one for both of my /Nin Stalkers.

Some people do not like caltrops, but I am one of those people that do.

Caltrops allows you to use them defensively or even offensively if played right which is why I love using them so much.

I was looking at smoke flash as a way to gain additional stealth attacks, does it not work like that? Blinding Powder was more for a little control and I was unsure if it allowed me another stealth attack or not. I tend to skip T9 defensive powers because I hate the associated crashes and thus i barely use them. I took tough and weave as all my scrappers take it for the extra defense and resistances and while /nin seems to have decent defenses, it has almost no resistances. As for the endurance reducers, even with stam on anything but my regen scrapper, I always find myself running out and then my toggles dropping.

Neither works like Placate the power.

Smoke Flash will de-aggro you, but won't place you in the Hidden state that grants critial damage.

Blinding Powder is a minor confuse and sleep that only works on minions. It won't de-aggro you.

You can however stand around and wait for Hide to kick back in.

hmmm, ok, so what's the real strength of /nin then because with no resistances and what seems to be a lack of utility, I guess I'm not seeing it. Maybe I should have gone with /elec or /WP?

I wouldn't recommend a resistance based set for a Stalker. I've tried and it's just less effective than a defense based set. /Nin is probably the best secondary for a Stalker, you get solid defense to melee, ranged, and AOE and with IO slotting can be soft-capped. /WP is OK but for PVE /Nin is a better set.

I won't argue with you about the fighting pool but NONE of my Stalkers use it and few here on the boards will recommend it. If you are used to playing a Scrapper, keep in mind a Stalker is not the same thing. Defense based sets are good for Stalkers because you git hit less often which means you can get AS off more often without being interrupted.

If you enjoyed your Scrapper, based on what you are saying here, you might try a Brute instead of a Stalker.

I agree with kinesia also if ur taking leviathan I would take water spout and spirit shark jaws, and maybe spirit shark itself for another attack. I didn't take a Patron yet gonna try it on test I might got Leviathan or Soul not sure., but you don't really need Hibernate either and with Nin you def don't need tough weave. you may wanna take medicine as a second heal just in case. I didn't take smoke flash or blinding powder. Just my opinion to each his own

Lack of utility? The fact that it's defence-based is utility in itself. The interrupts from every mob in the game hitting you while Hidden or Placated will drive you nuts.

That's aside from silly things like one of the best self heals in the game, a god mode, being endurance friendly, a cone mez that doesn't aggro, and something that makes the AI spaz out. No utility. None.

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

Well I knew when I picked the class that Brute would be closer to scrapper but I wanted something that was melee oriented but not just straight up scrapping or brawling.

I just kind of picked the epic powers on a whim, I might go to Mu Mastery for the ranged attack and an aoe attack.

As for the lack of utility comment, I guess I was saying I wasn't seeing what set this power set apart and made it so great as it was lacking resistances and had just been told that Smoke Flash and Blinding Powder were kind of gimmicks, at least that's what I thought was being said. I wasn't thinking about how the higher defense would help with AS and like I said I don't tend to look at T9 abilities because of the crashes.

All that said, that's why I made this post was to help get a better understanding of the powers and the class. I'm still really enjoying it, I guess the only thing I would wish for was fire melee.

My take on Nin:

If you just want the basics, it's fairly loose. It's got the same strength on the toggles as SR (remember, just taking the toggles), and only needs two of them instead of 3 to cover everything. They're both available early, and it has a Reconstruction copy to alleviate any desire to take Aid Self.

Blinding Powder is fun, and funny. It's also a good mule for IOs. Contagious Confusion makes it downright hilarious.

Smoke Flash... meh. I don't like it, but some people love the extra Placate. I personally find that it not being autohit and the longish animation make it less useful than I prefer, so I tend to skip it.

Caltrops messes with mob AI sufficiently that if it doesn't get you out of any problem, you're not trying to get out.

Playing with IOs will let you softcap all positionals, although your defense debuff resistance could use some help - you can, but shouldn't (see: Kuji-in Sha, Caltrops, Blinding Powder, Smoke Flash) suffer cascade failures.

As for EM, with a fair bit of recharge (216% in Total Focus, 191% in Energy Transfer, 176% in Bone Smasher counting global + enhancements) you can chain ET, BS, TF, BS - those are the highest DPA attacks in the set once you account for server ticks. It should do just fine even with less recharge, since Energy Punch is just below Bone Smasher for ArcanaTime DPA. I deleted my EM/Nin, but that was because I already had a 50 DM/Nin for single target, and an Elec/Nin if I desperately needed to do energy damage for some reason.

Obviously I haven't made it high enough yet to try out ET and but I'm not thinking that I'm going to like taking dmg just to use an attack. Now I know it can work as a great opener but is it really worth it after that?

The hit point loss typically proves inconsequential next to the immense damage inflicted.

This, especially after it's slotted; the self-damage isn't enhanceable, the rest is - without slotting the self-damage is equal to the energy portion.

And even with the self-damage, with Ninjitsu you're playing a set with a heal. Since with that level of recharge ET will be cycling around every 10 seconds (2.904 animation, 6.864 recharge with a gapless chain) you'll be taking an extra 17 DPS, roughly. Sha will keep up with that easily.

Personally I love shadow meld in my WP stalker. I can see it being even better on a nin. It gives my WP at least soft capped def across the board on top of the good resist and capped HP. Add SoW and he basically turns into a scrapper. I agree patrons can be skipped on a stalker, but shadow meld is full of win.

So here's kind of a build that I came up with. With the stats provided I can get ET and TF down to an adjusted recharge time of 8.712. With the chain lasting 7.47 with perfect execution, that leaves me standing there for 1.242 seconds. Now granted that time can be used for placating, healing, tossing some caltrops, confusing the mobs, or I could through EP into the chain which still leaves sometime standing or I could us AS as a filler. Granted all of this relies upon getting to 50 with about 500 mil inf.
