If you're not chasing set bonuses, then slot for max effectiveness of each power. In some cases that'll mean slotting a full set of something, in others it will involve serious frankenslotting, other powers may end up not using any set IOs at all, just regular IOs and/or Hami-Os.
I like stuff like 2xlockdowns. 3%damage
Quite a few sets have easily reachable +rech, +acc, +recovery. Mids is imperative.

interesting, well the good thing with kins, you can skip all the "normal" power's people get (dont need Fitness or travel powers) so you could grab all kinds of crazyness like presence pool!...nah

I slotted a lot of damage procs on my Ice/Kin - two Confuse ones in Arctic Air and three in Frostbite, with the aim of generating as much AoE damage for a slittle END as possible.
It worked OK, I could take on even con spawns in Dark Astoria pretty easily.
But Ice/Kin does obviate the need for most of the set bonuses I chase - Recharge and End flow freely eventually, and you dont need much defence when you have lots of AoE lockdown.
Even then, this felt less than perfect, since all the extra proc damage would be much better served by a secondary with -Res than +Damage.

This makes a lot of sense. I am going to start playing with mids.
I'm having a tough time trying to figure out how I will want to slot my controller. I have an ice/kin. With this toon I don't see any need or reason to get to absolutely high values in any area. There's really nothing that I will be able to get perma. Nothing I will be able to softcap, and no way to get levels of regen or hitpoints that will really change the way I play. I never really find myself motivated to slot for anything in particular. Can someone give me some ideas of good philsophies for slotting a ctonroller? SPecifically my ice/kin?
