what part of de mortius nil nisi bonum don't you understand

he was a hell of a flute player...

[/ QUOTE ]

How is saying "I didn't like him as an actor" speaking ill of the dead?

[/ QUOTE ]

A. I was kidding.
B. The translation is "speak only good of the dead," or near literally, "of the dead speak none but good."
C. See A

[/ QUOTE ]

Speak no ill of the dead is analogous to speak only good of the dead.

[/ QUOTE ]

not quite, but close enough for coh boards.

still, see A

It's just unneeded. If you don't like someone for what they're known for, then why even post about them, especially in their death thread?

Everyone's entitled to like or dislike as they please, but think about the circumstances before you go spouting off.

Kinky accidental death?

[/ QUOTE ]

i was talking to someone about this today. we were speculating about the portion of "hotel suicides" that were actually auto-erotic asphyxia accidents.

Granted, AEA deaths might be more embarassing (not sure to what extent intentional suicide would be "embarassing" or w/e), but I'd find comfort in knowing he didn't hang himself with the intention of commiting suicide.

I'll say this: if there's no note, my money's on AEA. I'm not trying to be morbid or disrespectful in saying this; I really would prefer to remember him as having died from AEA rather than an intentional suicide. It's just such a [censored] up way to leave and is much more traumatic for those left behind: family, friends, and (in the case of celebrities) fans. I mean the first question I asked was "why would he do it?" and wasn't able to come up with an answer. Granted I didn;t know him at all, so there could be a variety of reasons known to his friends, but even in cases of people I knew, and there's been an improbably large number of them, I was only barely able to understand why and even then only after years.

TL;DR version: It sucks, and I really, really hope it was some stupid accident.

"No Ill" is a larger set.
.
It includes
the set "Things that are Only Good" AND
the set "Things that are Neutral".

Love ya, Arwen, but I'll spout where I please. And I certainly hope we're not having our first argument in relation to David Carradine....

Why post in his death thread? To note that it was sad he had passed. So what if I said I didn't care for his work. I didn't say anything about him as a person, and I don't see why the circumstances should dictate that I can't state my opinion.

I read your comment more as "Although I wasn't a fan, I'm sad to hear that he died" rather than "It's sad that he's dead, but he really sucked." The latter just didn't seem to be your style.

Btw, I should note that I found out about his untimely death 20 minutes before any news article reported about it thanks to twitter.... Wonder if this is as staged as that whole bruno-eminem thing.

BTW Ba'a, it's starting to look like your theory earlier in this thread may be what actually happened. Nothing solid yet, but a BBC article reported...

[ QUOTE ]
Thai police told the BBC a hotel maid found the 72-year-old naked in a wardrobe with a cord around his neck and other parts of his body.

[/ QUOTE ]

The article apparently said something slightly different originally, but was later edited.

Whatever the case, it's really sad to hear that he passed.

wow @ the second link. It's horrid and tragic no matter what, but honestly, "accidental death" is much less haunting than "intentional suicide."

Thanks for posting those links.

Same. Very much so.

I wasn't a huge fan, honestly. He wasn't that prolific. But I did always find him to be an interesting person. I hate to think about what drives people to end their lives, and as [censored] up as this may sound, I honestly hope it was accidental AEA.

And as for 3s. I'd say Roh (RoK ex pres) last week was one of the 3.

No, it wasn't. I'm not an unreasonable person, and I only speak up when really irritated. That really irritated me, obviously.

I'm not arguing. I simply have an opinion, and so do you. It happens.

But, in any case, I don't want to further sully a thread that was created to commemorate someone that people cared enough about to discuss here. If you want to discuss it further, you know how to reach me.
