Tread slowly and carry a big stick =P
But really, pets had a speed increase a while ago (can't remember when, all I know is it made ninjas completely ridiculous to control... well more so)
I'd recommend not going too fast. Be sneaky, use sprint, or get a group travel like group TP or group fly.

my advice is to keep your pets on defensive when moving. Should make you take less damage, and I am pretty sure that the distance is irrelevant.

Your pets have to be in supremacy range for you to be in BG mode

Put them in Stay mode. They'll automatically teleport to your location when you reach a certain distance from them.

this is why i advocate all mm's should use team teleport.
cause quit efrankly making them run any faster than they do now just means more hilarity ensues when you hit that longbow flamethrower.
i can start at one end of grandville or nerva and team teleport. arrive with all of my pets with me on the other end of the map.
on the flip side of course, if your computer isnt very good and your internet connection is just as bad - this isnt feasible.
Yea, it looks like ima have to get team teleport and try that out whenever i cab get another respec
