This is, I believe, on TonyV's "long list of things" post. 
But it is a long list.
Many times when this comes up, people want to exit to the character select screen. The devs, as I recall, stated they don't want *that* happening due to security concerns - they want you to log out and back on.
The way you're describing it, though, I certainly wouldn't argue. Going directly to the login screen would be nice. (There would, however, still be a delay - the character still has a 30 second logout, even if you exit now. If you're quick enough, and on the same account, you'll get a popup saying "This account is currently logged on," and have to re-enter the password. It knocks the other character off, but you should be aware that delay *will* still be there. (I hit that when dual boxing - or even restarting the client - rather often.)
Going between accounts, it's not an issue, obviously.
Even when you hit "Exit Now" when quitting to the desktop, your character stays in the game for the full 30 seconds. This prevents using it as an Emergency Escape from a situation that's gone pear-shaped.
If you could "Exit Now" to the login screen, the first character would have to stay active for the full 30 seconds, for the same reason. Thus, you could possibly log in on another character while the first one was still active. I expect that would be Not Good.
Edit: Hmmm...apparently I forgot how to read.

This would help us altoholics out immensely! Some nights I find myself logging between toons several times, and the mandatory 30 second wait is sometimes long enough to make me forget what I was going to do! I know the "Exit Now" option exists when you quit to desktop, so why not have this option for quitting to the login screen?
