green lines then crash
[ QUOTE ]
A friend of mine has recently started having a problem. No changes have been made to the hardware but suddenly started getting green lines accross the screen and the game would crash a few seconds after launch. The computer would have to be restarted to get anywhere.
For a while it only did it sometimes and just trying over and over again would eventually work. Recently it's been doing it every time the game is launched. Sometimes instantly, sometimes after a few seconds. Always pretty quickly though.
Two part question:
1) Will uninstalling and reinstalling the game likely fix something like this?
2) If so, will doing so have any negative effect on any AE creations? I assume published arcs will remain published, but will they be editable? Will unpublished material be lost?
Thanks in advance.

When this happened on my old computer it turned out to be the video card. I found that out because it happened in other games.
1. Not sure about reinstalling. What OS/videocard do you have? That information would help the techy types help you.
2. Unpublished material is saved with your game files and you would need to copy them somewhere else to save them if you reinstall. Copy the missions/criiters/villaingroups (?) folders to your my docs or equivalent. -- I think published arcs would be reeditable without the original content but it's good to have it backed up.
Thanks for the info.
Copied most of the files to another folder in anticipation of that.
Video Card is GeFroce 4 MX
OS is Windows XP
Sorry for limited technical info, I don't have access to the computer to look at it.
I hesitate to blame the video card because it's worked otherwise fine with CoH for 5 years. Unless it's possibly overheating?
5years? hmm, the average lifespan of any piece of hardware is 3 years. anything past that and you are on borrowed time. of course, all things considered, you will see a variable lifespan for any component based on use and environment.
do not count the video card out as i think this is your problem just from the symptoms described. it will be a tough find to replace the card as the 4 series was borderline pci/agp. both of those video standards have now been completely taken over by pci-e.
my advice would be to try another video card (if you have one handy) and see if the problem persists. If that is not an option, you can search pricewatch, newegg, or ebay for a suitable replacement. I listed those in order of preference.
Here are some recommendations:
pricewatch: site down atm.
