Can we use 'strange' characters in text fields?

I'm sure I've seen non standard alphabet characters in some MA arcs. Can sb tell me how to put things like alpha and omega symbols and pi etc into my text fields?

Well, I don't know who sb is, but I can give it a stab. I know that you can do this in the chat window by copying and pasting from another application. You can try this. I don't know which characters would be accepted, though.

Just find your character map (charmap.exe, usually in C:\windows\system or \system32 if you're not on a Mac), find what you're looking for and cut and paste. I'm not positive the Greek letters are there, though.

**looks** Or maybe I am sure. ά Ω π

Ah, but it looks like this board doesn't reproduce them (UBB being a silly, archaic system). I wonder if it works in the MA

Excellent. Thanks all.

I played an arc (don't remember the name or anything) where the contact was a Russian and their dialogue included phrases using Cyrillic characters.

Cut and paste is the least fussy way to do it. I saw an arc that had Japanese characters, which was pretty neat.

Getting to more difficult possibilities, I don't suppose Kryptonese or Interlac are options? I could use some sort of truly "alien" looking text that isn't just Dingbats or something.

I'm not sure. Can we change the font style? I don't remember seeing that option, but I wasn't really looking for it, either. Most of the "strange" characters like Greek or Cyrillic are simply "alt+" standard options included in the more widely used fonts.

Well, I just created an arc entirely in Korean and it worked in every field I put it in including names and descriptions of custom critters, patrol and boss dialog, navigation text, contact dialog, and even the name of the custom group and the file name! 아사! :-)

edit: but apparently it doesn't work on the boards...

In order for it to work on the boards, you have to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow. Then then the forum font changes to venusian.

You can change the game font, but it would only be visible to you. I think TweakCoH gives you an option to do it.

And I can add that I used the trademark symbol (™) in contact text, and I just copied it from the first Google result for 'trademark'.

UNICODE characters also work (which is why Korean works ) You can find a list on Wikipedia - I have a heart I use all the time, and it's uh..prettier than the ALT+ heart

Or maybe just upgrade them from a system that was past its prime already back in '04.

Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow is simpler, and more effective, in pretty much every case.

Coincidentally I filed a bug report about this tonight.

When you cut/copy strings with special characters from within the game, they lose their encoding.

1. You can copy special characters from outside the game and paste them in -- they display fine.
2. You can type special characters directly into the game (for example, using Windows codes such as Alt-0151) -- these will display fine.
3. If you copy special characters from within the game to paste elsewhere -- either in the game or outside the game -- the character encoding will be incorrect. Something is switching the encoding from Unicode (UTF-16 most likely) to what is probably ANSI.

This can be reproduced game-wide; it's not just in the MA system. For example, paste — into the chat box, highlight it in the game, copy it in the game, and paste it back into the chat box -- it will be broken.

Yes, I noticed that as well, Pachelbel. While working on my Korean arc, I'm using the CoHChat application (from www.cohinfo.com) to write in Korean since it doesn't work in-game in the MA or even in the chat boxes anymore for some reason. I have to make the keystrokes for the characters and it shows up in English characters until I hit ctrl-Enter to switch it. Because of this, I can't edit anything once it's switched, so I tried to copy it out, edit it and paste it back in, but, of course, that didn't work.

I highly doubt this bug is going to be a high priority to get fixed anytime soon, though...

Qr - so just go make sure I get it - if I have a word document with my special characters on it, and I cut n paste from that into the MA text field, then leave that field alone, when I publish it'll work?

Yes, it will work. Just don't try to copy FROM the game. Copying to the game works fine.
