Force Mission Failure
Map: Atta's cave
Timer: 5 minutes
Objective: Defeat-all
Guaranteed fail. It would be difficult to complete that mission even if you had [The I Win Button], since just traversing the entire map takes nearly 5 minutes.

See Karl Rove Man's brilliant thread on how to make things hard on your players. My favorite: make a "Defeat Synapse" mission, and set Synapse to flee at 100% hit points. He'll be out the door before they've finished loading the map.
Fleeting_Whisper's idea is even more foolproof of course

I guess I need to be a bit more specific with what I'm trying to accomplish though. I want an NPC that the hero has to rescue, but can't because the NPC is defeated before the player can get it out.
Put them in a Battle, perhaps. Battles seem to start/be resolved before the player(s) even get into range.
A warning, though - while most fans of JRPGs still seem willing to put up with scripted failure, You-Lose Boss Fights, etc etc, not everyone wants that inflicted on them, especially in a genre which is all about solving problems through bold action. Put something like this in your arc and you can expect to take a hit to your ratings, or even RAGEQUITs and/or bug reports.

Then do things normally, have the NPC faint at the door and stay still, and include in the mission complete text that the doctors tried to stabilize them but they died.

So my grand plan for the Great Paragonian Mission Arc involves requiring a mission to be failed. Basically I want there to be no possible, or nearly so, way for the mission to be completed.
Does anyone have some ideas about how I could do this?
