Apologies, not gonna critique this, since I'm not sure where to start... not that it's bad, just that you could critique for content, subject or technique... and since I have to do my own work. I'll send you here, where I use to moderate five forums 4 years ago:

Wet Canvas

You can submit the drawing in either the Animal & Wildlife section, or the Drawing section, or Illustration section... and if it's still there, I believe there was a section for portfolio previews...

Oh wait, it's called the Student Dorm now... but oh yeah they have a few critique forums specifically for how much of a critique you want... and it used to get pretty detailed, and sometimes heavy, so watch out... enter some of them at your peril.

Oh and do not enter the debate forum, unless you are reading this from a watch tower, and you have Ronald McDonald in your sites. j/k

Do you use guidelines or just draw freehand?

Actually its not bad at all.

The main problem - you aren't finished. Basically, you have a good rough outline to work from, now you need to really deepen the shading and fill things out. Don't be afraid to make mistakes either ok? The first rule of learning to draw (Oh if only I had known!) - keep doing it, and if you screw up, just remember that as a "what not to do" next time.

Oh, and have fun dammit - that's critical.

I tried guidelines once and I totally got lost. I'm more of a freehand kinda gal.

My husband and I watched this show when we were kids *Yes we've known each other *that* long lol* that taught kids how to draw, perspectives, 3d imagery and the like. And for the life of me I totally forgot what it was called..It was on PBS I think..the guy was some sort of space dude...Anyway how that's relevant to this discussion, that's how I started learning to draw...and it was all freehand..

Freehand is the natural start for drawing and I can tell that you do it fairly well already. However, to move up to the next level I think you'll want to start learning some of the tricks and techniques like guidelines. I know it seems like if you can perfect freehand drawing that you wouldn't need to worry about guidelines at all, but it really does help.

I am going to assume that when you sculpt you create the basic shapes first, then fill in the details. Drawing is the same way, you build the general shapes then fill in the details (well that's one technique anyway.) That's why a lot of sketches have excess lines all over the place.

Here ya go, A sketch. I took that book LJ talked about in another thread, opened up the preview and tried out the techniques

To be honest, MrsAlpha, your husband's sketch looks really rushed and the proportions are pretty off... When I get off, I'll link you to some really awesome tutorials

Hey MrsAlpha!

I did a quick redline of your budgie.

Think shapes, right now you're drawing a 3D object very flatly, because you're not drawing THROUGH your object. Break it down into volumetric shapes. A great way to do this is to buy cheap plastic fruit, and take thin artists tape and wrap it around the object once or twice lengthwise, and then horizontally. Then draw the object with the grid on it. It will help you to start seeing things as volumes, and your drawings will soon reflect that.

Also, on reference, when you're attempting to learn about something, surround yourself in photos, not just one. The budgie photo is already very flat because of the angle it's shot at, and so you will pick up on its deficiencies first. Bad reference can be just as much of a hinderance.

Again, hope this helps Budgie Redline

The Imagination Station with Captain/Commander Mark Kistler.

I loved that show too!! Which is weird cause he's who I started learning "guidelines"(I call them Skeletons cause I'm spooky like that) from.
