I Feel the Earth Move - A Guide to the Earth/Sonic
[ QUOTE ]
I write this in hopes that someone can:
1) confirm or deny this information, and
2) fill in the details (if true)
I am, however, fairly certain this is accurate

I personally confirmed the values of resistance debuffage for Sonic Siphon and Disruption Field. I tested it again mobs + and - to me and the modifiers were correct.

Are you referring to the modifiers due to differences in levels? I'm in agreement with you there. What I'm referring to is the effect of Resistence Debuffs against opponents' Resistance values.
BTW: really great guide- I'm very glad to see such an unusual combination get such a good guide. I'm kind of sonic-ed out (I have a 41 Sonic/Elec Blaster, a 31 Sonic/Dark Defender, a 32 Illusion/Sonic Troller, an 18 Sonic/Sonic Corruptor...), but I did just start an Earth/Storm Controller, so I'll definitely be using your guide as a reference!

Ah... I think I understand. Do you mean:
Suppose my even level enemy has 20% damage resistance to smashing. I hit him with with Sonic Siphon and then attack. What happens?
Let's say your attack does X damage. Without using Sonic Siphon your attack would do 0.8 * X damage against your enemy. However, after Sonic Siphon your attack would do 0.8 * X * 1.225 = 0.98 X damage.
I have personally tested this. In fact, here is my data:
Level 50 Fire Tarantula has 20% Smashing Damage Resistance.
Level 50 unslotted Fossilize does 30.57 points of Smashing Damage.
Against Fire Tarantula, Fossilze does 0.8 * 30.57 = 24.46 Smashing Damage.
After Sonic Siphon, Fossilize does 0.98 * 30.57 = 29.96 Smashing Damge.
To formalize this somewhat:
Let enemy damage resistance, E, be a decimal value from 0.0 (0%) to 1.0 (100%).
Let damage resistance debuff, F, be a decimal value from 0.0 (0%) to 1.0 (100%).
Let gross damage of an attack, D, be any number >= 0.
O = Overall Damage
O = D * (1.0-E) * (1.0+F)
Hope that helps.
What a wonderful (and LOL funny) guide, HBS. I've been working on a new Earth/Sonic (level 13 named Fjorgyn - theme is that she is the earth goddess of Norse mythology brought to this world by Portal Corp.). This gets me really excited to continue leveling her up. Your advice is gold.
Thanks so much,

ottercubdc - wonderful to have you in the club. I love your concept and hope to see you in-game! Enjoy the experience. You're special and don't be afraid to let others know

I think that's it. Sorry, I thought there was some very strange way of calculating Res Debuffs on Res, but I couldn't find what I was looking for when I did a search. It sounds like your tests covered it anyway.

rolled up an earth/sonic last night, her name is LodeStones.
i've always loved the earth/ set, but couldn't find a secondary i liked with it... that is, until i read your guide. great stuff.

Welcome, polarflare!!! And good for you for joining the clan.
BTW, the guide has surpassed 5000 reads and is now on fire! Congrats to my fellow dirt-movers for supporting the cause.
Good guide. I saw this after I rolled my earth/sonic today and was amazed at how rare this build is (not that I see many earth trollers anyway). Earth and /sonic are two sets I have wanted to play for a while. It seems like a control monster! I can't wait to start working on this one.

Thanks Luciferion! I hope you enjoy it.
In other news: my real life has become so busy that my gaming time has been reduced to pretty much nothing. As a result, I am parking my CoH/CoV account for the first time in three years so I can focus on the issues at hand. As you know, my ability to post to these forums will end as well. After 6/28/2007, I will be off the forums for the indefinite future.
All my best to the Earth/Sonics to come. May our rare but proud breed continue to bring justice to criminals throughout Paragon.
Best,
HBS

A little over a year ago, I decided to try a 'Troller. I didn't want to be like everyone else - Ill/Rad or Fire/kin....
I decided to try Earth/Seismic (ya is it Sonic). I stumbled and struggled with it till this guide came out.
I have played Earth Tech a lot and will continue to.
I have been working on IO combos for this and have spent tried to concentrate on the Debuff, and Status Effects. My Job isn't damage, Leadership or Healing.
With the addition of the Issue 11 IO sets Earthquake and Liquefy have added to the Debuffs.
I am not huge on checking the numbers, but some of the people I team with on STFs are asking for Earth/Seismic as a 'required' part of a 'speed' stf team.
HotButteredSoul, I hope you can come back, but till then!

This is possibly the most fun guide I've read yet. Very informative and very complete from playstyle suggestions to a great analysis of the Epic pools! Five extinct stars for you Sir!
Rock Singer is only 8th level, and I've already included a power I planned to skip solely as a result of this guide. Thanks!
this is still one of the best guides out there. this guide is the reason i plan on rolling a earth/sonic
I've been playing Cov for over 2 years and CoH for about a year and a half...and I finally rolled my first troller! (earth/sonic obv )
I didn't realize hardly doing a lick of damage could be so fun. Only at lvl 10 atm, but I look forward to the Soup O' Death
Hey, I rolled an earth/sonic controller and I don't even miss my mind/nrg dominator! :P (First hero too!) My question is, I'm a containment controller and I was wondering if EQ and SC synergize together? Also, with hasten and a 3 rech slotted stony, would I need to pick up aid other? or will his brilliant damage resistance hold off an AV till hes charged again?
Hello! I'm baaaaaaaaack!
How is everyone? Glad to see the trusty Earth/Sonic is still embraced and represented.
Hey, it's good to see you back. After reading your guide last May, Earth/Sonic looked like so much fun and something out of the ordinary enough that I made one up and it quickly became one of my favorite characters.
Throw invention origins into the mix, and you've got one scary controller.
50s: DM/EA Stalker, Ice/Storm Corruptor, Night Widow / Fortunata, Earth/Sonic Controller, Ice/DB Tanker, Stone/Elec Brute, Bots/FF MM, BS/DA Scrapper, MA/Regen Scrapper.
The dude has got no mercy.
Yeah, thanks for the guide, the combination is really good, but now earth/thermal is pulling my attention. Earth/sonic is my highest hero so far.
i love this guide
My character "Fault" was born because of this guide and at level 39, he's one of the most fun characters I've ever played.
While I did make a couple of changes to the proposed build, I'd like to offer a personal thank you to Hot Buttered Soul for writing such an informative and fun to read guide that accurately represents the powers for what they really are!
Damn Glad to see your back.....
Issue 12 is pulling a lot of people back

Isn't it common for immobilizes to only negate KB/KD for the first ten seconds after it was applied? Do the immobilizes in Earth Control differ from others in that respect (I'm assuming not). Just a minor side-note.

According to Red Tomax, Stone Prison prevents an enemy from being knocked around for 12 seconds.
Thus, you can lay down your Prison, wait a dozen tics, then pop an Earthquake.
