Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.291 (Catalyst 6.9)

So he's still 2 revs out of date and the Cat 7s should be coming out shortly. EDIT: (Well, 3, but the 6.12s are so flakey they shouldn't be considered.)

Questions for ya, C_I, what resolution do you have set for your desktop and what res do you run in game?

When you look out over water, do you have the lower half of your screen showing a ghosted still image?

I'm having a problem with the anti-aliasing through my CCC. It doesn't appear to do anything. I've unchecked the box to let the application make its own decisions. I've cranked the anti-aliasing in the CCC up to 4x, or higher. CoH still looks like a twisted version of LEGOland. Jaggies left, right, up, down, and in between. Am I missing something here?

My system is very close to the one Bill describes in this thread. Radeon X800XT, 3.4 gig P4 w/hyperthreading, 1 gig of RAM. Just installed the new Catalyst driver and Control Center, having uninstalled the old stuff first.

In the game's video options do you have Bloom and Depth of Field Disabled, and Water FX either Low or Off?

There's some items being looked into, but at this time, as far as I can see, Bloom, Depth of Field and High Water are still breaking driver managed FSAA.

If you use Game managed FSAA (Let App Decide in CCC) Bloom does NOT break FSAA, but Depth of Field and High Water still appear to.

*facepalm* Yeah, I had Bloom on.

Now I feel like a doofus, since you've already clearly mentioned this.

I'll take my serving of doofus pie, though, since it means I don't have to live in LEGOworld any longer.

Thanks a ton for your reply, and this spectacular guide, Bill.

Just a note if you're a vista user, now that the catalyst 7.1 drivers are out and support CoH.

You cannot get higher than low shader quality. Depth of field effects cannot be used, bloom effects cannot be used.
The game might say your drivers are out of date, but the game works just fine.
CoH is more than playable with vista now.

Yet another reason not to load Vista. Please post if this is ever corrected in the tech forum.

The 92** series is no longer supported by ATI and hasn't been since (I believe) the Catalyst 6.5s.

You can probably still play, but it's time to upgrade.

While this is probably true that ATI doesn't "fully" support these video cards or earlier, I just recently updated to the CCC 7.1 on my gf's computer, reset her settings using this guide and her graphics look wonderful. BTW she's running my old ATI AIW 8500dvi.

Also 'I'm' the one having problems. I'm running an ATI Radeon x1300agp pro 256 and am having problems with freezes and lock ups. If anyone else has experienced this and have fixed it plz let me know. Here's what my computer runs.

400w antec psu
VIA K8t800pro mobo w/ HT tech
Athlon 64 3800+ (not oc'd)
512 mb DDR2/800 Dual channel
250 Hitachi HD (great deal couldn't pass it up throw the rocks later)
On board Gigabyte 10/100/1000
On board 6 chan audio
32x/16x/72x DVD RW +/- combo

Currently I have a fan blowing directly into the case but the case originally came with a single side panel led fan.

Just wanted to say:
Thanks so much for this guide. I've been tweaking with my x1300 and getting low FPS for the longest time. Now the game looks good AND plays good!

Thanks!

Heya Bill,

Before I continue, thank you for the guides, they've been mucho helpful.

I noticed in your updated rig settings you have CCC AF set to 4X now instead of 16X. That's a pretty big dip. Is it a typo? Or could you really drop to 4X and benefit from a performance boost without a huge IQ hit?

Just wondering, will try it out myself

I can see the difference between 4x and 16X when I sit still and bounce between the two.

But leaving it on 4X, my eyecandy demands aren't upset, and the performance increase is noticeable.

Moved before pruning occurs:

Howdy.

In light of the AMD rework of the Catalyst Control Panel with the release of the 7.2s, I decided it was time to put my assumptions under the scope again and see what I've had wrong all along.

Turns out, not much. But there were a few surprises.

The first demo I used was with a fire/dark corrupter inside an older warehouse map. The "new" demo was with my em/fa brute on the north port of Grandville so that I could retest water and world detail.

Temporal Antialiasing should NEVER be enabled. It's total garbage and hurts performance badly.

The jump from FSAA to FSAA+Adaptive AA-Performance is not a jump at all, but rather a performance degradation. So Adaptive AA is out.

Catalyst AI increased my performance by a whopping .3%. It's now out.

I've updated my Settings and Rigs link below to show what I feel to be the best settings to get a good balance of eye candy and performance when using ATI cards.

Here is a summary and full outputs of the testing I did using Zloth's coh demo launcher.

Please look through the testing I did above and poke holes where you see them. I was plannning to write another ATI settings guide based on this information, but at this time I've nixed those plans.

Thanks much.

I was wondering if I could get some reasons why on an 1900xt card it would inttermitently reset to a black screen (no signal) and then sometimes come back and some times not as if it was in sleep mode.

Runnin a gateway
amd athalon 64 x2 dual core processor 4600+, 2.41ghz; 2gig ram
22 inch monitor
300 watt power supply.

I think it might be the power supply, but I have had the card for 6 months now and this has just started happening last week.

Any help would be great.

i set mine like your with a 128mb CARD and all is well. however, VSAA had to be turned off. it absolutely will not work. i droped from 20fps to 7.
Now i understand everything some. also, with a 7.4 version CCC, alot of the options are slightly diff. i just left some on default and changed the others. vsaa and Vsync, as well as AF make the biggest diff i have seen. as for shading quality, you are spot on!

also, my screen will go black if i turn vsaa on. hope that helps..

I'm running an FX55 with crossfire'd X1800XT's and seem to get the same FPS with one card versus two. Stats are as follows:

FX55 @ 2.6
X1800XT + X1800CF
2GB DDR500 @ PC3200
320GB 7200.10
ATI CCC + Cat 7.6's
AA = Off
AF = Off
No Physics
50k particle count

I apologize, I can't remember all of the settings, but Bloom is disabled, DoF is enabled, Water Effects are off.

I pull about ~29 FPS looking toward the middle of the zone (higher indoors, of course), but hit the vertical sync when looking out over the water (to be expected).

What kills me is that I pull ~29 FPS with a single card, and with dual cards with crossfire enabled. Is my processor bottlenecking these cards?

If I'm missing pertinent information, just let me know, I'll update this post or repost when I get home.

Thanks!!

~PS~

Bill, how is the I-Ram? Gotta be pretty intense with the game files and page files on there!

I-RAM means smooth as butter. Didn't improve performance much if at all, but never writing to a hard drive has made moving through zones SOOO much better.

To your questions:
Across the gaming industry, there are only a few titles that show any performance increase from SLI or Crossfire.

That may change in the future, but right now, you're only going to see benefit when pushing into extreme resolutions.

DoF is the verboten! Kill it. KIIIILLLLLLL IT. Hit my rigs and settings link to see what should die in a fire and what's ok to run.

Also, there's a new sticky in the tech forum that's about as up to date as I've got on ATI settings that I should probably link to in my sig, but I don't have any more room to do so.

I have to thank you immensely BillZBubba, I've changed around my settings and 1) the game has never looked better (I thought physics on high would eat me alive) and 2) I'm peaking at the vertical sync 95% of the time (which gives me the warm fuzzies)

Regarding Crossfire: You're right, with the CF master card completely removed, I noted that there was only the smallest difference in fps...quite the disappointment :-\ Adding the CF card and enabling kept me closer to 60 FPS at 1680 x 1050, but we both know 30 to 60 is all but noticeable when it comes to smooth fluid gameplay.

I guess it's not all bad, I have a great card that I can use in another rig, or I can keep it where it's at and use it to warm my desk area when gaming in the winter (haha).

Thanks MUCHO for some serious insight into the unsightly world that is ATI settings on an nVidia game
