Moon Missions

Suddenly restored to full health, and my end returning I quickly bounded dropped an Ice patch knocking those foes around me to the ground. I made a bound away from the gate toward the way I came and landed in another group of foes. I stomped the ground and emitted a frozen circle of energy that froze nearly half of them. I then bounded off again toward Moon Base Beta. Soon we had out distanced the 5th column troops. But I continued traveling as fast as I could, to keep as much distance between us and Moon Base Alpha. Rather than getting tired I was regaining energy at an astounding rate thanks to Essex.

If Toy had had eyes, they would have widened in surprise. He had had a nice little escape plan for her partially worked out already and what did she do the instant he fixed her? Run off pel-mell into something that she probably wouldn't survive. Thinking quickly, Toy decided to take the "She wasn't actually brainwashed and your stupidity got me hurt" track, which started with...

As soon as Essex rocketed away from Toy, the mastermind collapsed in a heap as though he was a puppet whose strings had been cut all at once. His blue and red diamonded cape lay atop his unmoving form and Toy waited for Flieschman to start yelling at him for doing something.

Sometimes having morals really comprimises my job. Toy thought, That, and a have one hell of a weakness for women. And I don't even have any hormones to blame for stuff like this! Damn!

Essex soared through the air, eyeing the soldiers below with a frown. Her health was down, having thrown everything she had at Ace - Absorb Pain her primary - and then a quick Recovery Aura to keep him going. As he plowed forward through the soldiers and toward Moon Base Beta, she lunged down in an astounding show of bravery for such a timid droid.

Breathing in harshly, suddenly that metallic shrill ring cut through the end again.....and she leaned forward, releasing an earsplitting cry.

Now the funny thing about the Shockwave attack was that it wasn't really that strong. It only caused very mild damage, while knocking back the foes in a large area in front of her. It was Essex's last resort if things looked dire - scream in their face and take off while they got up. But the lower gravity of the moon amplified the knockback effect, sending a wave of Fifth Column soldiers sprawling back nearly fifteen feet as she hurriedly skimmed after Ace. Sticking near the Tanker in order to keep him healthy and clear, she managed to breathe in a word aside to him. "We've got to stop meeting like this..." she murmured.

Fleischman hurried back towards Toy, startled at seeing him dropped on the floor. "Y-you're downed too? Curse this infernal low gravity! I must have missed a chip...!" It didn't seem like the technician suspected anything as she checked the mercenary over for damage...

((Aww...I was expecting Ace to notice Spion sometime on his trips to the hospital. Oh well .))

Spion had managed to walk past every security checkpoint so far with his disguise. Nobody suspected a thing. And the hero he'd seen rush out of the hospital didn't even seem to notice him.

He finally found the section of the base rented out by Portal Corp.

Now let's see what's so juicy in there...

Toy caused several clicks and whirs go off in his body as though he was just rebooting. Waving off the woman's attempts at helping him up, he was far too heavy, even in the moon's reduced gravity, and pushed himself up to his feet. He staggered a bit and leaned against the wall. He looked down at Flieschman and slowly shook his head.

"I'm at least as surprised as you are. She must have been playing along the whole time, waiting for a chance to escape. Not your fault, doc, she must have been cleverly constructed," Toy straightened up and smoothed out some rumples in his cape. "I didn't expect to get hit low frequency sonic wave, though. I'll be damned if it wasn't the perfect wavelength to knock my gyroscope out of whack."

Sending a quick radio signal, Toy called off his bots and had them take up stations near the airlock. If Flieschman got suspicious, he'd need an exit and fast.

"...Indeed..." Fleischman murmured, the scientist's blue eyes narrowing just a touch. "...Regardless. It is regrettable that my research has literally flown out the door. I have much yet still to do."

Frowning, she paced a little, and hesitated, before glancing up to Toy.

"...You are under contract, nein? ...Well, then...I have a mission for you." Fleischman's eyes gleamed with malice.

"I want you to procure model S6. Use any methods you can. If you can drop as many heroes as possible in the process, there is a significant bonus in it for you. If you think I am boasting, take a look at my research facility. It is not the facility of someone with a small budget." Smirking, she waved a hand a little dismissively to the side. "I would prefer the android brought back here with its head and torso more or less intact. The healing modules are handy, but not necessary. Feel free to snap its limbs if necessary; I won't be needing them."

Glancing off to the side, she murmured to herself - though it was still within hearing capability of Toy's sensitive audio sensors - "...I will not allow West's toy to escape my grip so easily. I will have my revenge."

Lep had now ben carrying Omega for a while now. He was losing alot of blood, fast, and his hospital teleporter had been destroyed in the blast. "Aye, we are going to beta base" said LEP in a low tone. "we....cant....have...to..finish....mission.." Omega said weakly. "No lad, your need medical attention." and so LEP clicked his med-porter and was in beta base, but he relized he had made a hugh mistake....Omega was still out there.......

"Eh, great," muttered the mastermind to himself as he walked through Alpha Base. "Now I've got to ask Backer if I have to listen to her. Nothing about taking orders from another officer is in my contract."

The guard at the Kommandant's quarters looked up as Toy neared and gave the mercenary a nod.

"Kommandant Backer requests your presense on the command deck," said the sentry. Still thinking to himself, Toy nodded absently and started following handy signs that pointed the way to C&C. Walking up to the automatic doors that were the only guards to the command and control room, Toy stepped through and took a brief look around.

The room was fairly large, apparently Alpha Base had originally been intended as a military base. Banks of computers and monitors lined the walls and about half of them were currently occupied. A huge holoprojected screen took up the entire left wall and there was an island facing it. A ramp starting near the right wall led up to the top of the raised section of the room and a large chair with several computers sitting next to it were all that occupied it. Of course, there was also Kommandant Backer sitting in the chair and a typically anemic looking vampyr standing with him, but they weren't a part of the room.

A pair of warwolves looked up when Toy entered and their hackles rose as they realized they didn't recognize him. A pair of 5th Column Mekmen also reacted to Toy's entrance, but they snapped to attention instead of opening fire, giving the warwolves the cue they needed to calm down and avoid a fight.

"Ah, Toy Dispenser!" said Backer from up in his chair. "Wait right there, I'll be down in a moment."

True to words, Backer got up from his chair and started walking down the ramp with the vampyr in tow. Hesitant, and a bit surprised at this warm greeting, Toy moved to meet the Kommandant at the bottom of the ramp. As he got within reaching distance, Backer clapped Toy on the shoulder with a wide smile on his face.

"A very good job, my mercenary ally! I didn't expect a single man to be alive when I sent you to Cave Io but not only did you escape that, you even brought back the patrol leader himself! Ah ha! Verdant has been a veritable wellspring of information about the goings-ons of the Moon Igneus in that area. Based on the information he aquired, we can set charges that will drop an entire tunnel complex on top of their gravel filled heads!"

Not sure how to react to this, Toy bowed a little.

"Then you should be congratulating Patrol Leader Verdant then, sir. I'm quite sure he could have made it out of there, with or without my help. He is quite a soldier."

"And with humility too," spoke up the vampyr suddenly. "I am Intelligence Officer Beckett. I requested your services from the Kommandant for a mission that needs doing."

Backer nodded at that and then turned to go back to his command chair.

"I shall leave you two to discuss the details. Be assured that Officer Beckett is of equal authority to myself in regards to the mission he is going to send you on. And the best of luck to you as well."

Beckett waited until Backer had walked away until he spoke again.

"There is another mercenary of ours. A super named Spion. Officer Fliechsman sent him to infiltrate the Beta Base not that long ago. I require you to get as close as you can to Beta Base and meet up with him. The information he is after is extremely valuable and must not be recaptured. When you exit the base, a soldier will give you a small capsule. When you see Spion, show this too him. He will know that you are in our employ at that time. Escort him here post-haste."

"Alright, I'll see what I can do. And if Spion manages to get himself caught while trying to get out, I'll see what I can do about breaking him out," Toy said.

"Very good," replied Beckett and then dismissed Toy before walking back up to Backer.

Shrugging, the mastermind left C&C and made his way back to the airlock.

Essex picked up speed as they approached Moon Base Beta, a little smile on her face. She scooted around Ace on her thrusters in little bursts, circling and giggling.

"...And that was so neat! When all the soldiers were like...bam, bam, bam! And then you were like, 'I don't think so', and I was like, 'I'm gonna knock everyone over' and we kicked all their butts!"

"You seem to have perked right up." Golden Ace noted with a wry smile.

That seemed to clam her up a bit. "Well...um....I guess I'm just glad to be out of that place....and....y'know..." She trailed off a little. Essex didn't want to admit it - but most of her exhilaration came from the fact that she'd been rescued...by a villain of all people? Maybe Toy Dispenser wasn't such a bad guy! His bots were scary...but he had helped her...even though he'd said that they were enemies! Maybe they could still be friends... These were the sorts of thoughts that skated through her head as she entered the airlock with Golden Ace. A few Longbow noted their arrival and ran to greet them.

"Golden Ace! Essex!" one armored Longbow greeted. "You're back! We've been getting reports of some pretty serious villain activity while you've been gone."

"You have no idea." Ace leered at the Longbow agent, dusting some Pumicite off his costume.

"In the meantime...There's actually a package for you, Essex." the agent continued after an awkward silence. "Here." Handing the little droid a yellow envelope, he nodded.

"Oh!" Tearing the envelope apart, Essex produced a tiny little disk. "It's from the others!!" Taking another look at Ace, she gave him a goofy little smile and nodded her head. "Sorry...Looks like you're on your own for right now. I gotta go see this!" With that, she trotted off, nearly tripping over her boots with glee.

-------------------------

In the meantime, Senior Warrant Officer Fleischman had all but forgotten about everything outside her lab. Muttering to herself, she worked on a project in the dim, electronic light of her laboratory.

"Two can play at your game, Daniel..." she uttered malevolently as she fitted an energy generator into place. "And I have just enough samples to create...a prototype."

((Mmm...Can't...Resist....Moon...Goodness....))

((BUT WAIT! I am Soviet Strike. I don't play good guys....I play the best guys.))

Reikoff stretched.

((Oh, hells yeah...))

"I don't like these powersuits, boss."

"Shut the hell up, Curtis."

"No need t'get touchy."

"Keep your mind on the mission."

Samuel Reikoff, Curtis Richardson, and Marcus Marcone stood on top of the Portal Corp. base building in their inconspicouous spacesuits. Any PortalCorp employee would be wearing them, so a few on the roof was nothing big.

"I'm not getting too many supers. Mostly 'bots."

"I don't like it. Aren't there 5th here?"

"Yeah, but you know commander Firenze's policy on mutants."

"Bossman, we're bioenhanced."

"And? We weren't in his division when we got our mods."

"True that. C'mon, let's blend in."

Marcone, Reikoff, and Richardson jumped from the top of the building, slowly falling to the main door.

"Act busy."

The trap was laid, the Malta were in wait....

((Sometimes I worry that I'm either Malta obsessed or unable to think of anything original.))

(would have responded to you earlier essex, but my internet crashed and then i crashed my bike so i hurt right now.)
press start to boot from cd.....

beginning system check.........

All systems functional........

startup complete..

slowly unit 1's systems reactivated after what seemed like hours of emergency code repairs, but something was different. as his audio receptors came back online he heard alarms in the distance. slowly he started to sit up after discerning that there were no threats in the room, he noticed that there were still some tech's in the room sorting out the data that he had recently downloaded and putting them into relevant files.

as he looked at the technician's his targetting computers activated and the technician's showed up as green, telling him that they would be easy to take down. It also told him they shouldn't be here if he could trget them. Opening the sidearm compartment in his right leg he pulled out the crey pistol he had acquired some time back and took aim at the first technician. He activated his cloaking device and slowly backed away to the exit door only to find it was locked. "guess we do this the hard way then."he thought to himself, and fired the pistol on the first technician who instantly froze into a block of ice. the second technician turned to see who fired the weapon, but do to unit 1's cloaking device all he could see was a second beam hit him as he too turned to ice.

"now then, let's see where the key is" unit one spent a few minutes finding the key only to realize that he should have just pushed the manual release button next to the door. Something just didn't seem right about the tech's though, unit 1 moved in to check what was wrong with them. Astonished with his findings unit 1 activated his personell locator to find kommandant backer, seemed he was in c&c. unit 1 opened up an emergency line to c&c.

"kommandant, the base has been infiltrated by unknown units. I have two of them isolated in lab 1, requesting assistance."

"unit 1, can you identify who they are?"

"it is difficult to tell, they are either longbow or malta agents sir"

"understood reinforcements on the way, backer out."

a minute later the effects of the crey pistol wore off on the first technician, which unfortunately for him was poorly timed as 12 column troops piled in and took aim at him. then the second technician unfroze and the troops ruthlessly opened fire on the two technicians dropping them like sacks of potatos. Once the shooting stopped lieutenant eichmann nonchalantly walks in and begins inspecting the now dead technicians, then activates his radio.

"sir, eichmann here. the tech's unit 1 reported were longbow, looks like they were trying to delelte the files unit 1 brought in."

"understood, good job. search the base and begin id checks on all personnel is that clear?"

"as crystal sir, eichmann out."

"ok men, i want you to disperse into teams of two and keep radio contact. Check all personnel make sure they are who they say they are, we've got rats onboard and its time to scare em out." says eichmann. His troops immediately break off into teams of two and begin searching the base. Meanwhile eichmann turns to unit 1 and says, " you on the other hand have a different mission, report to fleishman for instructions. She should still be up top near the airlocks dealing with a possible intrusion."

"acknowledged" says unit 1and he heads out the room and starts towards fleishman's position. Unsure of the situation up top he takes his multi purpose rifle from out of the storage compartment in his back and heads up the elevator to the airlock room. when the doors open and he turns down the hallway he sees fleishman, but he also sees someone he does not recognize as authorized inside the base and immediately raises his rifle and takes aim thinking to himself "why do I get all the annoying jobs?"

((So? The Malta seem to make everything more interesting anyway. Plus their Titans are awesome in the arena.))

Spion quickly dragged the guard's body around a corner and stuffed him in a storage closet, disabling the opening mechanism as soon as the door had shut. It would take them hours to get that open again.

The reason why he had taken the guard out, a very special security key, worked like a charm, opening every door into the Portal Corp section. Then he entered the main lab, strutting around like just another Longbow on patrol.

A quick look about found him a free computer terminal, away from the many scientists, who seemed busy anyway and didn't even say a word. Well, all the better for him.

The computer's security systems were rather difficult. Had he not managed to fish out three more security keys from passing scientists talking about techno-babble, he never would've gotten in. Security was tight all right.

As he downloaded the data he needed, his eyes took on a satisfied glimmer - oh yeah, this was juicy. This was more than juicy - it was downright spectacular!

He took a memory stick from the computer and built a file path to copy something useless - how about some song by the latest heavy-metal band? Yes, that would do nicely. He loaded this onto the stick, using this file path to camouflage what he had really accessed.

As he removed the memory stick, he saw a passing robot of some sort. He had seen these before - at least on paper. They were Longbow's newest creation. They often referred to them as 'heavies'. As he saw a few more of them patrolling about the lab, he couldn't help but wonder what they would do to someone who tried to get in here by force...

"I hate plants," muttered Toy Dispenser as he kicked away a chunk of dead Ent. The large tree thing had charged out of a stand of normal moon trees accompanied by a swarm of smaller bush things that Toy had designated Entlings. As it was, Toy was pretty close to Beta Base and he didn't want to call unwarrented attention to himself. If he was lucky, Longbow would think that it was just some of their operatives running across the hostile plant life, which wasn't that hard to imagine.

"Found a good hiding spot, boss!" called out Small Toy from up ahead. Toy had sent the battle drone out to scout since one little robot was much less conspicuous than a great stomping group of them.

Within a few minutes, Toy was lying on his back just a foot away from the top of a small hill with a good view of Beta Base. Extending up a small optical camera, Toy kept a close eye on the base.

Essex tore down the hallway, disc in hand, looking for an empty terminal room. Unfortunately, she slammed right into Spion as he discreetly exited his terminal room, faceplanting into his stomach area with a humorous thump.

"Oh! I'm terribly sorry, sir! Are you okay?" she apologized profusely, backing into the room. "I wasn't watching where I was going...I'm really, really sorry." Before Spion could react, she'd flurried into the room.

"Now then..." Putting the disc into the nearby terminal, she sat back to watch the monitor.

Initializing...

A window popped up - a videodisc. She could see her brothers clamoring over each other on the screen, trying to be the forefront of the little camera they kept in the base.

"Hi Ess!!" spouted a frenetically waving red and blue android. He grinned in the camera. "Hey! Guess what! You're on the moon!! You're really on the moon! That's so cool!" "Shove over, Genki!" growled a teal-and-navy android, pushing the smaller-framed Genki away. Turning to the camera, he gave it a sheepish wave. "Hey, you gotta come back soon!" this one said with a little smirk. "Genki and Ginstar are driving me crazy! I need another intellectual before I go insane!" This one was met with a dual headlock from each side, one from Genki and one from another android, this one colored a garish combination of purple and green, sporting a mohawk and sunglasses. "Will you shut up, Seawing?" the latter one, Ginstar, growled. "Just because you're a geek doesn't mean we have to be. Don't listen to him, S. You have fun on the moon." Shoving Seawing away, Genki still clinging to him, Ginstar leaned close in to the camera. "And bring Seawing back a rock or something. The kid's been going off about Moon Pumicites the whole time you've been gone. We've been stuck having him as a navigator with you gone, and it isn't pretty."

Genki was now leaping in the background of the camera, babbling some odd cheer or another as Seawing scowled and tried to calm him down. Ginstar glanced back, and continued. "I gotta break this up. Burner wants to talk to ya too." With that, he moved the camera over a little onto a huge android. This one looked old and battle-scarred - in truth, he was the oldest of their line. He was colored in army-grade green, having been a line assault android until being honorably retired to guard duty for the facility.

"You come back in one piece, girly." the gruff android said with a nod. "We'd be mighty upset if somethin' happened to you up there."

Just then, a calm, older voice cut in. "I hope I'm not interrupting you four. May I put in a note?" The four androids in various stages of speaking, fighting, and peacekeeping glanced to the side. "Sure, Dr. West." Seawing said obligingly.

A human hand moved the camera.

A youngish man, probably in his early to mid thirties, showed up on the screen. He had a pleasant face, adorned with glasses, and had scruffy, dirty-colored blonde hair. He grinned sheepishly into the camera.

"Sorry I can't talk long, Essex." Dr. West said, scratching his head. "I've got a little research to do. But I sure do miss my little lab assistant - I haven't swept up a broken beaker since you left. Anyway...Your brothers all really miss you --"

"Gimme an 'E!' Gimme an 'S'!" Genki's voice was heard in the background and she could barely see him leaping to be seen above the Doctor's shoulder.

"--and I miss you too." Dr. West continued after a quick glance backwards. "Come back safely. Remember to be cautious. Don't do anything reckless, and remember why you're there - to learn, to heal, and to help. We miss you, Essex. See you soon."

With that, the video blipped to a close.

Anyone passing by the room would see the little android, kneeling on the ground, her head bowed and her back to the door. She seemed to be shaking.

What an odd little...something or other...

Spion got back on his feet, making sure he still had the memory stick, then proceeded back to his mission. He could already see the last exterior door straight ahead. Three Portal Corp employees wearing their space suits were working on...something. Then again, when wasn't Portal working on something?

Spion hastened his pace slightly as he saw two heavies enter the hallway behind him. True enough, they thought he was Longbow - but he didn't really care to find out how good his disguise really was...

"Psst." Grunted Reikoff subtly.

As Spion ran out of the building, the Malta exchanged nods and glances. Reikoff stared intently after him, lights flickering in his helm.

"Nothing in the World Super Database. Guess we'll have to add an entry, eh? Come on."

The three Portal Corp employees smoothly brought it to anyone arounds' attention that they had left a part out in the flatlands, and softly hopped away from the base.

((By the way, Marcus's last name is Marcone. It follows that he is related to the Family. Be mindful of that later.))

Spion kept a good pace, not running in order to seem unsuspicious, but also not wasting time. He noticed the three men following him when he turned a corner to a corridor that did NOT lead outside and they changed direction just the same.

Looks like I've been discovered. Probably Portal Corp's own security force.

They most likely hadn't blown his cover yet because they wanted to know who he was working for. Too bad they wouldn't find out.

He made many senseless twists and turns to put distance between himself and his followers, knowing the entire layout of the base from where the secret weapons caches sat to where the toilets were located. A photographic memory was definetely a good asset to any spy.

He reached the main gate well before them, checking out like any other agent on patrol, then quickly made his way into the nearby foliage and set a few traps. A few trip mines, two fields of caltrops, some poison traps here and there, and an acid mortar would distract anyone nicely, if they didn't kill them outright.

As he rose and started moving again, he looked at his little field. Everything was camouflaged to a tee, and he could already see his pursuers coming out of the main gate. They'd have quite the fun time when they entered the vegetation.

Removing his disguise and preparing to become invisible again, he suddenly heard a rustling. He raised his rifle, scanning about until he saw an oddly colored figure.

"Spion," it said, "I've been sent by Intelligence Officer Beckett. Here is my proof."

He handed the spy the capsule. Everything was in order - the message was in a code only he and the Kommandant knew.

"Ain't that nice of them?" Spion smiled under his gray face mask, "They even send me an escort back to base. And who would you..."

He was interrupted by a loud "PHOOMPH!"

The acid mortar he had placed had fired its first shell...

"[censored]!" Roared Curtis as he quickly sprayed chemical foam from his suit.

"Ditch the damn suits, we're found out!"

The Malta seamlessly unzipped and jumped clear of their powersuits, flying into the air in the Malta's own space gear. The suits landed and exploded brilliantly on a trip mine.

In the middle of a string of curses, Reikoff threw an EMP grenade into the trap field, hoping that the electronics would fry....

Moon Base Beta seemed to shake with the sudden explosion of the mortar, jarring Essex from her homesick haze. Getting up a little shakily, having been startled in a particularly vulnerable moment, she gasped under her breath.

"What was that...?" she whispered to herself. "Are we under attack?"

Skimming out into the hallway, she heard the alarms even before she saw the Longbow tromping up and down the halls in formation. "Someone's firing mortar shells near the front gate!" one of them called out to Essex to answer her cry for an explanation.

Not villains again...! Essex thought, with an edge of paranoia invading her thoughts. With that, she skimmed out to the entrance to have a look...

---------------------------------------------------------

"Ah, Unit One." Senior Warrant Officer Fleischman turned to greet the 'bot. "So good of you to join us." Gesturing to the figure beside her, she smirked.

"This one doubtless shows as unidentified to your sensors." she began. "But don't worry. It's mine. It's a small...project I've been working on. In fact, it's almost ready - but not yet."

Draping a sheet over the figure, she approached.

"I assume you're here for instructions regarding the intrusion." she began coldly. "Unfortunately the ones I'm worried about have already escaped. As much as I would like the S6 model returned, the one our databases registered as Golden Ace would make a fine subject for study. We already have operatives moving to Moon Base Beta, but I'm not sure if they're capable of much. But there is one thng I need."

Glancing at Unit One, she nodded to herself, as though assuring herself the robot was up to the task.

"I need three X-C condensers. My assistant burned out the spares like the imbecile he is, and now, as expected, I have a need for them. Would you drop by Moon Base Beta and ask them if I could borrow a few? ...If you know what I mean."

Turning her back to Unit one, she shrugged. "Sorry I don't have anything particularly exciting for you to do. Though infiltrating Beta may give you an opportunity to flex your figurative muscles, so to speak. I hear they employ quite a few idiotic Longbow."

Spion's remaining traps fizzled out as blue lightning arced across them, frying the electronics. That wasn't good at all. And he doubted the strangely-colored man there could do much with but the single pulse rifle he carried.

"Fine, yall want the info? Then you'll have to take it from me!"

He raised his assault rifle and set the plants in front of the approaching Malta ablaze, then threw caltrops into the flames just for good measure. Fire always did a lot better when people moved through it slowly.

Now that he had a little cover in the form of a rapidly spreading inferno, he opened up with his rifle on full auto...

"Fire!!" Essex cried as her thrusters picked up speed, carrying her towards the conflict. The first thing she noticed were several people lying around the base of the blast radius. Figuring she'd revive some of them soon, she first concentrated on refreshing as many as possible, sending shockwaves of the healing green light over the surface of the moon - likely in a far enough distance to heal Maltan and mercenary alike.

Next, she pulled back her fingertips inside her buster arm and took careful aim - a stream of depressurized water inside it bursting forth.
